I hope that compiling blender in Windows will be easy again one day...
There is a guide for 32 bit Windows too.

Latest builds from svn fot Ubuntu: ppa:cheleb/blender-svn
the range is staggering..yes im sober!!
Brilliant tutorial! Thank you so much for posting this!
I wrote a few scripts a month ago that automate the process of downloading/updating the Blender sources for several branches, defined in a config file, and then compile all those branches.
Anyone interested in them? I need to clean them up a bit for other people to use first.
Why does it say 64 bit?
In my humble opinion everything should work fine even when installing 32 bit version...
Wonderful tutorial, it's really needed.
Thank you!
:-)
all those "restart your system" are absolutely misleading, there's no real reason to do it (not even for a graphic driver change actually), it is not windows.
32bits work on Ubuntu but I think Blender 2.5 is faster in 64 bit system.

You're right, but in some cases, minor problems occur without restarting. I have experienced this before.
Btw, I know there are daily Blender compiles for Ubuntu, but knowing this technical compiling info is especially useful for people who wants to change and understand Blender code. Maybe someone wants to add great new features to Blender. Who knows? Changing Blender code is so exciting :)
Are there any differences between 10.10 and 10.04 (in this case)? Somebody try it?
I run Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and I simply extract the file from the blender website and it runs fine without doing anything extra. Does it not work for all of you?
I am running Blender the same way as Benjaminad. And it works for me. What is the point of this compiling?

Knowing how to compile doesn't hurt. Some people may prefer compiling their own builds. They can add blender patches as well. :)
First of all, compliments for the good tutorial,
in the mean time I wanted to post an article on a script to automatically download and compile blender from svn for latest Ubuntu/Debian O.S.
you can grab it here:
http://assistenza.larasrl.net/brisa/fgfs/download_and_compile_blender.sh
run it inside a dedicated folder as normal user.
The tutorial works great on ubuntu 10.10 32bit. didn't realize that compiling took a lot of time. however the long wait worth for getting blender latest build. BTW any tips on changing the icon ("emblem")?
