Hi community.

If you want to run and compile Blender 2.5 in Ubuntu 10.10, read this step by step pdf tutorial carefully. Believe or not, running and compiling Blender in Ubuntu is very easy now.

I hope this will be useful.

  1. I wrote a few scripts a month ago that automate the process of downloading/updating the Blender sources for several branches, defined in a config file, and then compile all those branches.

Anyone interested in them? I need to clean them up a bit for other people to use first.

  2. all those "restart your system" are absolutely misleading, there's no real reason to do it (not even for a graphic driver change actually), it is not windows.

  3. 32bits work on Ubuntu but I think Blender 2.5 is faster in 64 bit system.

You're right, but in some cases, minor problems occur without restarting. I have experienced this before.

Btw, I know there are daily Blender compiles for Ubuntu, but knowing this technical compiling info is especially useful for people who wants to change and understand Blender code. Maybe someone wants to add great new features to Blender. Who knows? Changing Blender code is so exciting :)

  4. I run Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and I simply extract the file from the blender website and it runs fine without doing anything extra. Does it not work for all of you?

  5. The tutorial works great on ubuntu 10.10 32bit. didn't realize that compiling took a lot of time. however the long wait worth for getting blender latest build. BTW any tips on changing the icon ("emblem")?
