Square Polygon - 3D Problems, Questions & Answers

16

squary-polygonSquare Polygon is a new question and answer site for 3d and visualisation professionals.

If you and have ever had a problem trauling through forum pages trying to find the answer to a question about 3d modelling in Blender, rendering or post-production this site is for you!

The most relevant questions and answers are voted to the top (digg style) which means they are always easy to find, and as you earn reputation on Square Polygon users gain the ability to edit other peoples posts, tags and more, just like a wiki.

There's not much Blender activity at the moment, but it looks like a nice place to get some generic help.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Hey Bart,

Thanks for the post, as mentioned we are still building the community, and to promote this i have prizes to give away on the site every week for at least two months - all you have to do is ask or answer a question to be entered :)

    Cheers!

  2. I was just joking around, giving an example of a possible question.
"All my game engine is turn pink!"
I'd say maybe 3 people would think that is kind of funny :D
That's a good idea though, to compile some of the more difficult questions with solutions into one area,
I wonder if they'll filter the questions so it doesn't turn into a glut of newbee questions?

  3. They say "the most relevant questions and answers are voted to the top (digg style)"... but who does the voting?

-> The guys asking the questions. Therefore expect the most frequently asked questions to bubble up, e.g. "how do I do modelling in Blender?". Yes it may be relevant, but to whom?

I still think a good forum with a good search engine is the best. I believe even the Blender Forum's search engine can be improved, as I struggle to refine my searches. I find that the more terms I add to the search, the MORE results I get!

Fair point, the main thing with the voting is that the best answers get voted to the top. The best questions get voted to the top to, but this is less of an issue as there are many different ways to view the questions on the site.

  5. If you can see your faces in your game it most likely is the fact that, your Normals are off. In non GLSL game faces(poly) only face one way. You can change the way the face(poly) is facing by changing the normals. In edit mode, select the face, press 'W', then click on flip normals. Or you select all faces and go down to the mesh->normals->recalculate inside or outside.

  6. Are you going to keep track of the people with the most answerers?
That could almost be a competition in itself, because
some people know every little facet of Blender and could answer
every question on Blender many layers of development,
    or technical answers as well.

We have a reputation system where you get awarded points, for example:

+20points for writing the best answer
+10 points for having your answer voted up

There is a full list here: http://www.squarepolygon.com/faq

I am currently working on some more features to do with tags which should expose the users with the best answers and enable you to find for example the best Blender user on the site.

    Cheers!

  8. @tommy, of course there is some inspiration from stack overflow, but good luck asking your 3d modelling questions over there ;-)

@dread knight, glad it helped you! Don't forget to sign up!
