Blender ARt Gallery

42

blender-art-galleryIsn't it strange that the Blender community is lacking an extensive art gallery? Sure, there's a small selection on Blender.org and BlenderArtists.org, but the majority of great works go by unnoticed to the larger audience. Maybe the new 'Blender ARt Gallery' can fill this void?

Hey its me again. This time I have a project of mine that I would like to share and hope it interests the Blender Community. I've created a site called Blender ARt Gallery with the hope of showcasing the best artworks from the Blender Community.

Blender ARt Gallery hopes to showcase the best artworks from the Blender Community. The site is updated weekly so please be patient. If you would like to submit an image please visit the Submit an image page.

This site is currently hosted on an iMac. I would like to raise $70 to pay for a year of hosting and not have to worry about my isp banning my ip for hosting the site. Any amount of donation is more than welcome.

I find this home-based hosting and asking for a donation a little worrying, but let's see how this works out.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Thank you! ... I've wrote recently a review for blender in a software review site and I was blocked a little because I could not back up my words with examples of images created in blender - the galery from blender.org is very limited.

Thank you again, you're of great help!

  2. Fantastic little site that could blossom if regularly updated.
However I still think the blender.org gallery should be the go-to gallery for regular blender art. I've offered to help update it myself but I was ignored.

I really think the community is missing out on an opportunity to advertise what Blender can really do. Please someone update it!

  3. Agreed 100% with redbyte. Blender community in general is great, but we are lacking some kind of "headquarter" for different things, such as resources (models, materials, textures etc.), artworks, tutorials and so on. This just makes everything so difficult when you are looking for something and if from one side it's true that Blender is spread everywhere and this makes the app itself the be known by almost everybody, on the other hand is quite confusing, especially for newcomers.
I'm not saying there should be one website for materials, another for models, scripts etc, but at least one place in which all the resources are gathered together (having links would be enough). Blender has a page for communities, artists and professionals, but it's quite old and out-of-date, a lot of websites don't exist anymore and many else have the last updated in 2006-7. So far the best thing I found to avoid all this mess was Delicious, adding Blender friends and draining their links (yeah redbyte I did the same with you, sorry :D).
Regarding the gallery it's a great idea! Another place where artists can put their artworks. I just hope it won't get lost in the internet ocean if not properly supported/advertised (again, what I said above)

  4. Site is down. Nice idea but a single iMac on a domestic connection won't cut it. You need the reliability offered by a hosting company.

  5. I kinda of find a bit hard to take the idea seriously of a gallery that is run on a single imac using a domestic connection.

The site is already down so I guess I won't find out what the fuss was

  6. I've taken the link offline for a moment while trying to route it through the Coral Cache network.

Update: well, that didn't work - sorry! Time to make plans for a better, more robust gallery I imagine ;-)

  7. Bart, I know that (sorry actually I forgot to mention the best resource we have :P) and I really appreciate that BN tries to do that :)
However there's still a lot of stuff out of there and of course I see that is impossible for you and a bunch of other people to keep track of all the Blender stuff that comes out everyday, even because if nobody notifies you about the resource you won't never know it and most of the time people don't do that, don't ask me why :).
Maybe (and I say maybe) having feeds also on BN would be helpful, like PlanetBlender does, but of course is less popular than this website. So that would save you somehow from "running after resources" since part of it would be automated. If I said something dumb I apologize :D I was just trying to figure out a better way to track resources (even if BN does it great already)

  8. Hey Akta,

actually I'm already working on a such a feed system. Wait and see :)

Still, that would't be very useful as a 'library' function I think. That's why I set up BN Links - to work as a library for the Blender community. It's quite a lot of work to maintain though - maybe there are some volunteers who would like to help me out with that?

  9. That's a great news!
Well I'd love to help you, actually I already do that on my own so it would be just a matter to share what I find with BN. Just let me know, I guess you have my email so if you need a hand just drop me few lines there :)

  10. That would be great but could your imac and connection hold the traffic?

Also the Blender.org gallery seems to be updated. Theres two new ones there. Colibri and Gorilla. You better check it out.

  11. Such an art gallery is ideal if you want to introduce other people to Blender, but they think it's just an amateur package. Then you can show them "Hey, all this great art was done with Blender 3D", which shows how advanced that 3D package really is. (Done this in the past with the art gallery on the official blender site)

  12. A good idea would be to add a "go to gallery" button in the new 2.50 splash screen. I thik it should be a renewed gallery in blender.org or maybe yours :))

  13. nice idea. I hope the gallery would be as big as blendernation or graphicall

btw, its remind me of blenderart magz, which is make me sad. At first launch, blenderart magz has sooo many nice art at the gallery section. But nowadays, its just sad..

  14. I agree with the first comments that this should be part of Blender.org

This is the first place people that are new to Blender will go looking. What better way to showcase the best of blender than to have the DEFINITIVE GALLERY on the mothership.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Blender.. here's what it can do.. oh and by the way here's a link to download.

How about offering to maintain the gallery on Blender.org?

    just my 2 cents.

""How about offering to maintain the gallery on Blender.org?""

@comeinandburn, I've heard of several people trying to do that already, no joy.

  16. I, too wish we could get it on Blender.org, or if not there, here on BlenderNation! These are the two sites *everyone* interested in Blender goes to. Much easier to add here than to try and get everyone going to a third from nothing. That said, the current site looks great, and I must admit, as someone following Blender for years, I still went "Woah! Impressive!" when I first saw all the cool images.

One question though... Where are BBB and ED?

  17. thanks to thibsert I've found a host so you might experience some downtime. I haven't started the transfer process as the hosting is waiting moderation.

@tmr232: need to include www in the url

  18. Nice site! So I tried to submit a picture - several times - but it kept coming up with a validation error saying that the image failed to upload. Huh? It's a jpeg that is 51K in size. Tried to contact the site, but I can't find an email address anywhere.....

  19. It doesn't matter if you use www or not in the URL, the web server responds 403 forbidden every now and then regardless. I just got in after a few tries and it looks really nice!

  20. Just a possibility (interesting timing), but I have a cool domain name (with Blender in the name- was supposed to be a work site- but never got around to it) already chosen and purchased with hosting that someone is more than welcome to use for a gallery site- the catch- You'd have to help design it. But hey, its already there... let me know if anyone would like to as an open source project. There may be one caveat that I can think of, but let me know...

  21. Bart, change the link in the article to have the 'www' in it... then it should work properly. Currently the link brings up a 403 forbidden page.

  22. Hi dronix,

I appreciate what you're attempting to do, but technically you are violating copyrights by putting this art on your website without permission. I'm sure everyone would gladly give you permission if asked (the blender community is cool like that after all :)), but still its better to be safe than sorry.

Also, I didn't see anyway to contact the artists. I've been given some freelance opportunities in the past because of my work in the gallery on blender.org. If your site does successfully evolve into "the" place to find blender artists, a way to contact the artists would be a helpful feature.

Also, I might be able to help with your hosting problem. My email is on my website if your interested.

  23. Great, man, great idea. I recommend ASmallOrange.com for hosting the website! I look forward to adding my artwork to your collection!

  24. thank you everyone who messaged me with regarding to webhosting. I too agree tthe gallery should be hosted on blender.org, maybe gallery.blender.org, maybe just create the subdomain and forward it to blenderartgallery.com? I've managed to find a host (TuxFamily, thanks thibsert) to host the site for free. The site is fully functional, including the "Submit an Image" page.

@Jason Pierce: All current images are from the latest gallery of blender.org. There are images that have the authors website, the rest only have an email address on blender.org and I've decided to not included it until I can get a way to spam protect it. If you would like to remove an image, let me know and it will be taken off immediately

I've taken down the donation link as the web hosting has been resolved. However if anyone would like to help with adding and tagging the images, please let me know. This way we can update the site as much as possible. The gallery would only showcase the best artworks and so some of the submissions won't meet the standards (mine :), for now ), but don't get discouraged and do continue submitting your best work.

Thank you again for all your responses. Any more suggestions are welcomed.

  25. Hello guys I need help here. I seemed to have forgotten an important thing. What license should this images be under. I'll update the "Submit an image" page with an option to choose the license, once we've decided what license should the images be under.
