  1. Uh... I can't make any conclusion from the list. We want to see if there is speed improvements right? Not how fast our system is rendering right? Then there should be comparison. This would be inconclusive if you don't even know how fast from the previous build this new build is. There is no comparison in speed between builds that could be done.

  2. ralmon is right. This benchmark mixes all kinds of things. Different blender versions, builds, processors, RAM, OS, and puts them all in 1 list.

  3. The way I see it, it collects all kinds of information which is good. It just needs some better reporting tools to get the juicy stuff out.

    @Agile: any chance of a better presentation of the results, or a written report of the progress of Blender performance later on?

  4. This benchmark is not fair for the newest versions. You have new options to optimize the scene render times, like the approximate ambient occlusion that can get similar scene quality with much less resources.
    IMHO, to be fair, the benchmark should not use always the same blend file, but the same reference image (ie, the cornell box), and measure both the render time and the similarity with the reference image. Human effort should be made to create a blend file that exploits the new render options on each blender version to enhace render time, image quality, or both.

  5. there is no point in running a 'render test' on such a simplistic scene. What I have found to be slow in blender has been the raytracing side of things and raytracing tends to slow down logthrimically the more complex a scene gets. the scene doesn't even have a thousand faces.

  7. I think that this is a list to see who has the fastest machine, it shouldn't be used to compare blender versions.

    To see which blender version is the fastest, simply render the same scene in different blender versions, but on the same pc. It's pointless to compare 2.5 render times on cutting-edge pcs against old versions being run on old machines.

    By the way, 2.5 renders that test scene in pretty much the same time as 2.49a on my pc.

  8. The new Blender is just slightly faster than the old Blender. I checked my time on test.blend (4 cores=8 threads with hyperthreading), and my time to render the 'stock scene' was 0.37 seconds faster with the new blender, than with the old. My case fans increase RPM when the CPU core temperature goes up. Rendering this, the fans never changed RPM (simple scene, no temperature change).

    I have a little influence how the data are presented, since the maintainer of BlenderBenchmark is someone else.
    But I always tried to isolate the key factors that are important for optimal Blender performance.
    As one is simply hardware upgrade, the other rely on proper usage of available resources.
    Not everyone have access to a powerful renderfarm, and most users are unaware how rendertimes explode
    when we try to switch on options like AO or Raytracing.
    In blender there are some critical setting that disabled do not influence the final result THAT much, and still gives
    an appealing images.

    We may also use optimized blender builds from graphicall.org and render from command line.
    An of course choice of operating system - lightweight Linux seems reasonable.

  10. Hmmm, been trying to find a reliable way to proper benchmark the farm here. Interested in Maxon's cinebench system but if there was a way to send this to all the nodes and get a reliable benchmark with each different build on the main servers it'd definately give an exponential figure as to how well the build improvements in render time scale up onto a larger farm.

    Love graphicall, specially Kai's script collection edition, wow, that's saved soo much work.

  12. Wait until they implement Open CL and with the power of multicore CPU+ multithread GPU I predict a big leap in rendering speed (like real time raytracing #gasp#).

    But as usual, in the mean time, Blender developpers will have added physcially accurate volumetric fog, realtime fluid simulation, unbiased raytracing atomic level detail particle dynamic and many fun stuffs that will eat this speed up and send us back to an average of 10 min/frames for rendering :D

Its a good idea in theory, but as I see it, there are way too many factors to take into consideration when comparing between two different people with different skill sets and levels of experience in optimization. I have often wondered whether newer versions are faster, and I believe that it is possible to test such curiosities (as I now do whenever a new version comes out), but only in very localized situations. There is no reasonable way to parse all of the data collected to introduce a well compiled, logical, and broad-ranging result.

  14. I don't think this is very intelligent. 32-bit vista with 8GB of RAM??!!!? That doesn't make any sense at all. Also, this proves that having more cores doesn't quite help you in current versions.

  15. @Dread Knight, There appear to be plenty of 64 bit OS's on the list that have two CPU's, at least when I look at it. Also, it's the threads of execution that really matter. As you can have a single socket (on CPU) but it could be a dual, quad, 6, or 8 core (or hyperthreading) allowing for more concurrent threads of execution. For instance, I have an Intel Atom 330 which has one physical CPU but it is dual core and hyperthreading giving me 4 concurrent threads of execution. This is regardless of running a 32bit or 64bit OS.

    @Thomas, true enough, last I knew 32bit Vista could not address 8GB of memory, but the machine could physically have 8GB of memory in it. So while the physical specs could be correct the OS would just disregard the additional memory ( probably something on the order of 5GB wasted there). However, I have noticed that having more cores does help, at least where the test.blend is concerned. On my Atom 330, running with one thread of execution took around 9 minutes while using 4 threads brought the time down to around 3 minutes, I'd say that's a pretty substantial increase.

    +1 to getting some better reporting on the stats, if nothing else a way to sort based on the columns or search for specific blender versions.

  17. This is one point why I am using Blender very seldom!
    For your Workstation you have to test many many versions to get the fastest.
    And unfortunately then you miss some features!!!
    There has to be ONE Blender that detects the hardware and renders depending on the used system at optimum!!!

  19. I don't understand that chart at all. Chips are splattered all over the place. Stronger ones, weaker ones, running windows, running linux, more ram, less ram, yada yada.
