Hello all. The 2009 Blender F1 Challenge has concluded and the results are in...

ZORDAN defends his Title as the Blender F1 Champion!

The voting was fairly close between Zordan and Kyle Dell'Aquilla but in the end, Zordan pulled out the win. Ogee and Zenzen were not far behind. It was a great competition this year with many great entries. Here are the top 10 Challengers:

  1. Zordan
  2. Kyle Dell'Aquilla
  3. Ogee
  4. Zenzen
  5. Kellyq
  6. LaTaupe
  7. Coyhot
  8. Luis Roach
    Nikolaus
  9. Larkeo
    Uber
  10. Boombert
    Laci

Thank you to all of the 101 Blender F1 Challengers and I hope this contest was a good experience for you. There are really 101 winners in my opinion simply because you decided to "challenge" yourself, your Blender skills and enter the race! This is really the goal of the Challenge.

I look forward to next year with hopefully a new and improved Blender F1 Challenge web site. It was a learning experience for me as well! :)

Ciao for now!

More information on each entry can be found on the F1 Challenge Homepage (bottom left).

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I knew it Zordan's entry will be the winner, on the first look when I browse those entries this is the piece will gonna win...

Hmmm... well all of them were awesome. Anyway they do great job and great entries :D

to be quite honest there were like five winners in this thing!
-kyle really brought on the action!
-zordan as always wows us with technically great renders.
-my personal fav was ogee! you could seriously see the race in your head! I mean what it would sound like, feel like - perfect!
-then there is laci talk about bizzare - how long did that take??
-boombart that looks like a pixar render - the lighting just ace!

@pildanovak Don't expect people to share the same taste in things, the very piece you like is in my lower five of entries, the textures, lighting and composition don't do it for me. Zordan and Luis Roach entry are my favs I love the compositional arrangement in both pieces. Hopefully I plan a little better next year and actually finish my entry.

  4. Awesome! Every participants has done awesome works !

I prefer Coyhot, Zenzen and Ogee ... but all 10 are really good !

You really need that man. I didn't even see some of these entries in your small thumbnails.
Most are entries that had threads on BA and that played some part surely

  6. Great competition. Thanx to Curtis and all participants. My favorite is the one from Ogee. What an infernal machine.

  7. Very nice entries! Kyle Dell'Aquilla is neat with the debris and fire, Uber's is sleek, and I would like to see a film done by Luis Roach! :D

  8. I thought the Laci render had the best texturing of all of them, especially the environment. Coyhot's design would've been stellar with a driver and a sense of speed.

Overall I thought everyone had great designs.

I disagree. All of them have that slight and not-quite-understandable quality that makes them, well, look like renders.

Laci has it too, but much less... The textures are highly detailed, and the model is so bizarre that it's believable.

I think the only thing Laci needs is a bit more beveling on the surroundings. That's all.

I am disappointed that Laci got last place. I've been busy with other things, and never got a chance to vote :(

My other favorite is Rey... That looks like a painting, it's so artfully and stylistically done! Absolutely beautiful!

@Tynach you post just proves my point at how different everyone tastes are. I don't know its just my opinion but Laci piece was not my favorite visually I found it all too busy and incoherent. The use of colour was not quiet there for me. But all of these are very strong entries which is a good thing for Blender because it means the pool of talented artists is growing. This competition almost didn't happen but it seems that the strong community response has been enough for Curtis to commit for next year. Thumbs up to those that took part and completed.

I can't wait to see what the Blender World Cup and the Blending Life contest (if it comes back) bring to us. The are some seriously good artists out there and these competitions seem to bring them out. Incidently two of the people working on Durian are winners of both these comps, Blender World Cup (Zordan) and Blending Life (Angela)

My dream and hope is to one day see a blender artist take one of the huge comps such as domiance war, avatar or cgtalks challegenes

  11. WOW! I just knew I was in 9th place!!!! YUHUUU this is a great achievement for me. It is the first time I enter a contest of this kind. Thank you very, very much to people who vote me. Congratulation to the 101 (like the Dalmatians), and thank you Curtis for taking the time to promote this.
