Terragen 2 is Now Available!

20

Terragen nodesAt least the technology preview. In development for awhile and something many have patiently waited with anticipation. Well you can download it now!

So far my opinion is still on hold until a final version. I do like the realtime 3D preview of the scene. Very slick and fast. Some things do seem a bit unrefined and unoptimized. For example, the renderer seems extremely slow in comparision to comparable rendering engines and enabling antialiased node links seems to really slowdown the node editor to a crawl. The clouds do render amazing and the lighting is very realistic, the node editor reminds me a lot of blenders oops schematic view. Some of the functionality I would think would be neat to see in Blender. ie. changing groups in oops or outliner, changing where materials link in oops.
The download page is located here.

Some pretty nice animations can be seen at the download site as well. I'd recommend downloading the documentation. Planetside also states that Terragen 2 is compatible with XFROG plants. Make sure to check out greenworks for more info on that. It would be interesting if XFROG nodes remained intact and could be animated in Terragen.

  1. I looked at some of the renders and the plants make them look CG. The first terragen looked more realistic to me. I would still like to accomplish these types of results in blender.

I might try out the ant script:

    http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread?t=34955

and use the new mesh tool to sculpt my landscape out a bit then apply some bumpmap and see what I come out with. I saw something similar from one of the blenderheads but can't remember who.

It is that fine detail that would be tough to accomplish. I see lots of small rocks in terragen renders.

We should have a photrealism landscape contents. I would participate.

  2. could not they do it a little more available to be able to use easily. functions may be so effective, but it would be better they could work on interface a little more. It seems so basic and cheap...:O

  3. interface looking 'new-skool' does not make the application's render any better, only how efficient the UI is =)

Looks great, will download soon to check it out.

  4. gotta agree wiht g-mac, the interface looks like windows 95 or something.
They should take a leaf out of VUE's book........

  5. The announcement of the preview in september already was very old news back then.

Only a 30-day trial version :-((. What a ripoff! That means that there is no free version anymore. :(

    long live Capitalism(!)

  6. I did not say these things to say that this program is bad. I wanted to say that "I liked it, and it would be nice etc." but anyway, I use bryce 5 for the ground and some more etc. and it is effective as much as terragen, and it has a new version abd because of this, it gives 5.0 free and if you did not try, do it once.

  7. Jezz people it's only an alpha at the moment and it still produces far more realistic results the vue or bryce. By the time it is in it's final stage of development the renderer will be optimized and multi threaded and the UI will be cleaner. I think it is rather easy to use if you understand nodes abit but honestly you do not even have to use the nodes, just use the menu tree on the left. I do that most of the time anyways. This is a whole new beast, give it a chance.
