A good introduction to basic rigging and some useful tips like using CTRL-N to recalculate bone normal orientation, something you don't think of as a useful command, but it´s very usefull to have the bone´s Z axis pointing in the right direction.
It appears that it will be a series of tutorials. Part one appears to be mostly complete, as does part two.
Part one - Flying Bird - Building the rig is located here.
One thing that appears to be missing and I may just have missed it is a modeling tutorial for the bird or the actual mesh to work with. Even without those its a useful tutorial for learning the process.
It also appears that a NLA tutorial is planned for the bird as well. But a placeholder is just available now here. No tutorial is there yet.
Part two the skinning or weight mapping tutorial is available here.

Hi ,
I just want to report a skinning tips that i discovered when i was searching to speed the process .
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78815&highlight=skinning+tips
The patch discussed in this thread didn't been accepted , maybe in a later version (2.5 ?)we will have a better one (merge with the mirror modifier ?) .
Or maybe we will have a python script for this , currently my python scripting skill are too limited to create one myself :-( ( i even don't know if it's possible to do this ) .
Ok that's all folks :-) .
jeeesshh what a surprise!! I modeled that bird for our SnakeMan project! almost 2 year ago..
Could this be like a sneak preview for our some-day-finished project? :)
Venom I´m sure we will finish that project someday, even if we are 80 and with no theeth :-D
This is a great tutorial but...where is the 3D model man?! Or maybe...we should make our own? I'm just saying!
with no theeth? waa.. that's enough to belive you ;)
By the way, great tutorial ZanQdo :D
