Siggraph Demoreel Call for Content

19

sigdvd.jpgIn order to be able to present the best Blender artwork at Siggraph, we are working on a new Blender DVD.

If you want to try and get your work shown on the world's most important 3D exhibition, then read on.

Last year the coolest and best Blender artwork was shown at Siggraph as a 9 minutes long video compilation [65MB]. It was a great tribute to the qualities of Blender artists and it led to many positive and even surprised reactions of people who were unfamiliar with Blender. Of course we have to do that again this year :)

Ton has asked me to collect and compile the greatest work of this year and to prepare another Siggraph-worthy demoreel of Blender work. Like last year, Jan Morgenstern (the composer of Elephants Dream) will compose the music. We will make the DVD available in several video formats the week before Siggraph starts. This year, the focus will be on animation. Still images are still very welcome but hopefully they will represent less than half of the material on the DVD.

Planning

The planning is as follows:

June 15th - Call for content
July 1st - Content submission closes, Ton and I select the best work.
July 5th - First rough edit done, music composition begins
July 14th - Music composition ready, video edit finetuning
July 18th - Finish demoreel, prepare DVD version
July 22nd - DVD community release
August 1st - Start of Siggraph

How to participate

To submit, send your work to [email protected]. Be sure to include your name as you want it displayed in the video and the title of your work.

A few important notes

  • Don't include your name or the artwork title in the material; we'll add that.
  • Don't make our mailbox explode by mailing us videofiles, but instead publish your work online somewhere and send us a hyperlink.
  • The DVD will be rendered on PAL resolution (720x560px), so if you want your work to really stand out in quality don't send in low-res videos.Use a mainstream video compressor (such as XVid, DivX or DV). I will not install obscure codecs on my machine if it cannot be read by recognized standards.
  • The DVD will be released under a Creative Commons license. When you submit your work you agree to us including it on the DVD. Be sure that you are the rightful copyright holder of the work you submit (e.g. you don't have a client who doesn't want his work to show up here).
  • We're expecting a lot of response on this so we will not be able to communicate with you about the inclusion of your work. You'll have to wait and see the final version to know for sure ;-) You will however get an automated reply confirming that your file was received correctly.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I don't know enough to say, but I wondered if PAL format DVDs are viewable on NTSC screens?

I mean, this *is* an event in the U.S. - nobody will be able to view it if you can't view a PAL format DVD on a North American DVD & TV, right?

  2. I loved the last demo reel. I even downloaded that patiently on my dial-up. I look forward to this great new demo reel again. All artists' arts were great & the video composition too was great...and not to mention the music too was great. :-)

  3. I loved Siggraph Blender reel 2004 and 2005 (DVD ISO available somewhere) and perhaps will submit an animated version :)

About PAL/NTSC, PAL has higher resolution than NTSC. Many DVD players play both versions and on PC it plays both as well.

Is the image burnt on CD-ROM?

The past few DVD ISO's are around 500-700 MB

  4. As far as I know you can play PAL DVDs on NTSC hardware and the other way around (of course it won't be region locked ;-). The reason I make a PAL DVD is that my copy of iMovie (yeah, I don't have any high-end tools ;-) creates PAL resolution movies. I haven't heard of any problems with the previous reels.

  5. Hi everyone,

I believed that this article needed to be at the top of the homepage for a while just to get everyone's attention. So I had to do a bit of WordPress work tonight. I hope you didn't see too many strange effects ;-)

  6. It depends on your hardware. We've got three DVD players here, one plays PAL fine, one won't touch it, and one fail to display the color of PAL DVDs. The one that won't even try is the most expensive one, but that seems to be par for the course -- the bigger "name-brand" a player is, the fewer features you get with that fancy nameplate.
An NTSC disk would be nice, of course.

  7. The majority (that is, all) of the work I've got is NTSC resolution/framerate. I'm not sure it's practical for me to re-render the pieces I'd like to submit. Would you prefer to do the conversion to PAL yourself, or should I make a PAL-ready version with my video editing app?

  8. Man it sounds a good idea,

I think I will be prepared for the next year season only, but I can say that in this way we will improve a lot our knowledge of 3D and the real Blender 3D possibilities ...

    Thanks you all,

    Tio Ilmo

  9. I loved the demoreel from last year, and now I am working for something to submit, but I have a few questions:
Is 16:9 (720×425px) content useable, or is 4:3 (720x576) content preferable?
Is Creative Commons-Non commercial-No derivatives with premission to be used in the Demoreel and commercially as a part of the demoreel an acceptable license?
What's your the best length of an animation? 10sec,15sec,20sec,30,sec?

  10. Is the Creative Commons License going to allow for "commercial use" of content on the disk?.. That would exlude most of what I do at work?

  11. Three quick questions:

1: Is the Quicktime Animation codec ok?

2: Do you want widescreen or 3:4 ratio?

3: I assume we only creative-commons-licence the video, not the origonal .blend(s)?

I’ll send you a nice, soundless 20-second clip soon!
