This weekend: #NEWPALMYRA Hackathon, Paris

2

This weekend in Paris, #NEWPALMYRA meets in Paris. They invite Blender artists (among other people) to help them digitally reconstruct the art that was lost in Palmyra by the attacks from Islamic State.

They're also looking for someone to give a quick introduction/mini-training in Blender. Anyone up for that?

Challenges

The #NEWPALMYRA success will be about bringing the craziest ideas from participants and make them real through the community.

I have listed some of the practical challenges we imagined for the first Protocultural event in Paris on our website.

One important challenge of course is to reconstruct the complete 3D model for the ancient city of Palmyra from all drawings, archeological research, ground surveys, pieces of maps, etc. This is more like a long-term objective for #NEWPALMYRA and we will definitely love to work with the Blender community on this.

My personal focus has been to bring scholars, esp Syrian archeologists that are in France following the war. We want to have a big reliable data rep to rebuild this ancient city - and other things around it.

Computers

The space in Paris has lots of computer, though I don't know really how powerful they are for 3D rendering. we are working on setting up more infrastructure to provide to participants (rendering, etc.), try to get different partners on this right now.

Demo/Mini-training

One thing we want is to make a Blender demo / mini-training on Saturday afternoon for event participants who are not familiar with 3D. We have a room with 10+ computers available.

I was planning to do the Blender initiation myself, but maybe someone from Blender Paris will be interested in doing it?

This event in Paris is a first step to gather people, see what we should do and get things started for real.

The whole project is just cranking up and we have much more to come, with events (Dubai, SF, LA, etc.) and of course 3D artworks and exhibitions.
