Sci-fi short: Exhale

2

Beau Dreier Gligoor writes:

Hi all, I would like to present my 3D sci-fi short, Exhale. This animation shows you the story of humankind spreading it's genes through the universe.

I made this animation in the first quarter of the second year, so that is within 8 weeks. With this kind of pressure you have to make sharp decisions, that influence the balance between speed and quality. The assignment was to use a maximum of 3 shots and to create something vet (meaning cool in Dutch).

I got my Inspiration from the series "Cosmos" presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson, As well as "Ambition" and "Wanderer's" short films (youtube). The cosmos just has a dangerous and unknown feel to it, but also mesmerizing and has the ability to get you lost in space and time.

Software used: 80% Blender, ZBrush, Terragen and After Effects. Rendered with cycles around 250 hours.

If you have any questions or feedback I'd like to hear it.

Beau

  1. Wow that is koud, i mean cool in English .. super !
When i saw it, it reminded me about the great novel Arthur Clarcke 2001 a Space Odyssey
It could be something related to the mysterious monoliths in his books.
I think this short concept does scream out loud for real movie, i hope you will consider that .

Where did you use Terragen in here? (it al seams blender ?)

    • Thank you, yes multiple people said to me that it reminded them of 2001 a space odyssey :).

Well a full movie would be great, but I'm studying multiple subjects at this moment, anatomy, figure drawing, rendering and texturing. So I don't really have the time to produce a feature length film.

I used Terragen for the backdrop of the earth around 0:11, I matched the camera data from Blender into Terragen (FOV, angle & translation) and rendered 5 images. Then I attached them into Photoshop (Forgot to mention it).

      Thanks.
