If you're between 15 and 18 and live in the London area, you can join a free Blender movie making workshop by 3Dami. It runs from July 24 to August 1 and requires participants to submit their portfolios.

Tom SF Haines writes:

3Dami is a summer studio for college students (15-18), running at UCL in London, England from the 24th July until the 1st August. Now in its third year this is actually the first year in which we have a real budget! This year 24 students will form 3 teams, each charged with making their own short film, from script development all the way to a finished short and premiere. A studio structure is used, with the students taking on the director and producer roles. We provide the support and education to make sure they achieve this goal, as well as the hardware, which includes a substantial render farm. There will be a tour of a special effects house or game studio, plus exposure to industry and academic experts. Our website (3dami.org) has details from previous years.

Our tool of choice is of course Blender, and we take in a wide variety of people - we like to have a range of students with different backgrounds and skill levels to reflect the multidisciplinary nature of film production. Anyone who lives in the UK and is between 15 and 18, inclusive, is welcome to find out more and apply on our website: 3dami.org.

The event is free (including lunch!), but we do expect students to demonstrate their interest by submitting a portfolio. There are 3 portfolio deadlines to keep an eye on:

  • 21st April – First deadline, from which we select a quarter of our students.
  • 30th May – Second deadline, and the biggest – we fill a further half of the available places.
  • 14th July – Final deadline, for late applicants, from which we select the last quarter.
