Blender 3.6 has released and with it comes the new Simulation Zone in Geometry Nodes.
This new feature allows us to carry out simulations directly inside the geometry nodes graph while still having access to all the procedural power we've come to know.
To help you build your procedural skillset, I've produced 3 new courses for simulations in Blender 3.6 and they're hosted on my new platform for technical art teaching - Nodegroup.
In the first course we lay the foundations by creating a bouncing ball simulation. Bouncing balls are animation 101 but for us as procedural artists, they are the perfect exercise to lay the foundations of working with simulations. We will cover topics such as applying forces, building collision systems, and enabling interactions between objects within the same geometry.
Then we dive into Boids simulations. You'll build the skills to create intricate ecosystems with dynamic interactions between prey and predator boids. We'll enhance the simulations by extending the system with colliders, collision avoidance, attractor and repeller objects, attractor / guide splines, and more.
Lastly we're going to be learning about hydraulic erosion with soil transport. This is a popular method for creating compelling landscapes with large-scale erosion patterns cutting across the hillsides. We're essentially simulating rainfall here and as such, all the particle control that we learned in the previous two courses can be used for directing your erosion here.
Simulation is an excellent skillset for any technically inclined artist and I'm really excited to see how the community will jump on the new tools!
