Unlocking Amazing Tools in Blender

I love Blender...

Yeah, I say that all the time. It's not a hidden thing, is it? well, Blender has lots of things hidden under the hood. Addons that should be just on all the time, like Loop Tools, right? Right!

But hidden in plain sight are two massively useful tools that a lot of people are not even aware of existing. Right above the Outliner are two little bars. One saying "ViewLayer" and one saying "Scene".

Remember, this is not Maya, so the word scene is not a reference to the while workspace. Scene refers to the fact that you can have Multiple scenes in your Blender file. That' right...multiple!

And Viewlayer? Yes, you guessed it. You can have multiple viewlayers in each scene. Think of it as a pre-AOV solution.

So, enough of this, take a look at the tutorial and see how these things are more than useful, they are imperative!

I am a Senior Creative over at Space Digital in the North West of England. I've been creating CG stuff for the TV and Corporate World for (mumble-mumble) years now and have been lucky to work on some amazing projects. I discovered Blender about 9 years ago, opened it and, like so many other, immediately shut it down, but several years ago I needed to so something simple and cost effective (ie. free) and Blender was the only way. I have never looked back and use it now all the time alongside Maya every working day. I also have a YouTube channel called GENVFX where I teach people how to use every modifier one by one and as deeply as I can as well as the occasional tutorial.
