I've just stumbled across an interesting article about how Blender and Meshlab were used in a scientific paper to figure out the possible energy consumption of a prehistoric Megaldon, and thus discover more interesting stuff.

Megalodon is one of the largest sharks that ever lived. It is estimated to have had a maximum length of more than 20 meters and a weight exceeding 50 tons. And, at some point in history, it disappeared. Nowadays, there are controversies regarding its existence or not; but if it existed, how and why did the Megaladon disappear? The answer to these questions can be found through scientific research of Megaladons with the help of Blender.

This paper is not abut beautiful images, is about discovery.
