Just to put this out there, in the properties window and on the object tab you do have an option to display wire and draw all edges in 2.79 (and quite a few of the younger builds)
Why there is no way to hide objects within collections? It make no sense.
Hopefully, it's not yet implemented. For now it's indeed quite tedious to hide individual objects.
On laptops, when we use 'emulate numpad', how could we use the numeric keys for the top, side and front views?
Still badly needs an option for 'wireframe only'. The wireframe with transparent surfaces thing is kinda nice I guess for some purposes, but we also need a proper wireframe mode. Sorry Ton.
I agree completely. The 2.8 viewport currently makes everything look fuzzy and vague, even the floor grid, and the semi-opaque wire frame overlay is hopeless. If this over-anti-aliased look is supposed to be the future, I'm going to have to keep a copy of 2.79 around for detailed editing long after 2.8 is released. I think the problem, as ever, is that the whole Blender team is focused only on creating fluffy-cartoon characters, and not users who need to create hard technical objects.
