[non Blender] - Creating Skin Textures From Scratch

This tutorial by Derrick Sesson shows us how to create a realistic skin texture. He uses Photoshop and Maya, but the techniques are pretty app independent, so enjoy!

Derrick Sesson writes:

I've made a tutorial on the process of creating semi-realistic textures from scratch in Photoshop for the use of a 3d render of a character.

I show the process of building each layer up from simple images found online, and quickly adding form and texture to our skin with very little effort.

that's a lot of photo manipulation stuff in there but good results.

i can't help but think that at least for non-realistic characters the freckles/spots could more easily be done with a brush that has jitter settings. gimp, krita, and mypaint could probably handle that part more quickly than pasting the same texture as a new layer and placing+rotating it each time.

You can easily create a brush from photograph to use it when texturing or download premade one e.g. from deviantart. Actually I have a lot of brushes for texturing purposes. They are a great time savers.

  2. I'm a big fan of symmetric unwrap. most of the time you can mirror the base and add only small differences from L and R side.
