I bought that model [of this ship]of Cubicfun 3D puzzle (made of paper & Expandable Polystyrene foam board) in July 2013, and before to start the making of it, I did photographs of all the pieces.

Really I like to model in Blender all things I see, and with the photos of the ship pieces, I might model it in 3D with Blender (in its last version in that time: 2.67).

I created the 3D model in high-poly using the photos as background and textures, so I just gave them depth (using mainly the Solidify modifier) and created the UVs (the whole texture is contained in a 2048x2048 JPG file, baked with Ambient Occlusion). It took me about 5 days making the model (going slowly, sure).

I wanted to create a video-animation of the ship building itself, but I haven't had time for that. But I uploaded a reduced version of the ship to the great website Sketchfab!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
