An international crew of Blender artists is raising funds on Kickstarter to create a 12 minute Anime film using Blender and Freestyle.

Jerry Miller writes:

Follow Akari as she returns to investigate the suspicious death of her father. Along the way she discovers she has a split personality.

"Akari no Chikai" is a 12 minute 3D Anime film about a girl, Akari, who survived the attack that killed her father and took an oath of revenge. The project was based on a project by Vicente Carro (Anigo Animations) known as ABC of Akari. The concept changed and new characters were added.

This project's team was brought together through a Blender group on Facebook and is almost finished. We currently have a LIVE and published Kickstarter page for crowdfunding and are proud and excited to present to the blender community, XYGen's very first Joint Animation project, Akari No Chikai.

The team is looking to raise $40,000, which will go mainly towards the artists (a full budget breakdown is available on their Kickstarter page). Parts of the movie will be released as open content later on.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Guys, I love your stuff! Pardon me... but showing to regular anime fans your test Open GL (especially these) renders is an "illusion breaking" thing. People who just watch movies and comments on plot and scripts live (actually) in the world you've created for them. And now (before finishing your great "performance") you're easily "throwing out your pants" and "whooalah! come and see what we have here!" :D
Sorry, it's rude from me but you can really ruin some magic in non-CG people's heads. Their minds are too fragile to bear this IMHO. It's like telling your little sister "No real Santa exists on Earth! It's just a man with a synthetic beard".
