Dewald is working on a Hansel and Gretel short as a personal project.
Dewald writes:
First character I finished for the short film personal project I am working on in my free time. The short film will be my interpretation of the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.
Modelling of Hansel was done with Blender, my weapon of choice for character modelling.
Texturing was done in Zbrush, I tried Blender but switched over as the painting features in Blender didn't seem good enough, I will give Blender texturing a second try soon, as I might have been the problem. :)
Rendered in Blender Cycles. Because of the interactive nature of Cycles, shading was set up in a flash with very good results.
Hair was very problematic as Cycles doesn't have any hair curve rendering support. After trying everything to convert the curves into geometry without success because of the high number of strands, I rendered the hair in Blender Internal and composited it together. I am not entirely happy with the hair results.
This is not the final version as some things will change as soon as the required Cycles features become available. You can find the Blender Cycles roadmap here. The features I am eagerly waiting for is hair and subsurface scattering(SSS). I will carry on with the rest of the characters in the mean time.
I am looking for a writer to join the project.
Other artists that is needed is:
1. Concept Artists
2. Storyboard Artists
3. Modellers
4. Lighting Artist
5. Sound Artist
6. Voice Over ArtistsThis project is a personal project and people should only join for the love of creating it and credits.
You can check the progress of this project on my blog.
Please let me know what you guys think.

the character looks good but still hair looks good enough to go ahead.
And good luck with your project i will be following up.
Nais! I like that you put the tree shadows to the render.
I tried some texturing in Blender yesterday...you really can't rotate you brushes, can you? (I can use texture-nodes for that, but that gets the flow out of workflow)
Thanks knekke.
It will slow down the process for sure. My problems were that the soft brushes created some harsh edges when I layed down very low opacity layers and also I could not push the sculpting polycount to get nice tertiary level details to bake the normal maps and AO maps.
I agree... Texturing in Blender needs a lot of work.
@aa43c3e8a42024d11dec36d5090bf269:disqus , I also really like the lighting you did there! Looks good!
I like the gras, the little boy's clever eyes, his beautiful rendered socks, even his braces, his funny shoes and the little tip of his shirt that points outside ... :-)
Hope you'll find the help you want.
I can't help, I'm only a beginner, a newbee, and I have my own project(s) in mind that relentlessly push me further. But there are a lot of Blender Heads all kind all over the world, I wish you good luck in your quest and succes !
Thanks for your kind comments. I have received lots of
offers for help so far. Very excited about it.
:)
it is a beautiful render , very nice chracter work heer , I like it , my only concern is that ,the boy does not show any poor elements to him , like stitched patch work in his clothes etc ...
I agree with your comment and have lazyness to blame. If you check out the concept art I did (http://www.theemptyroom.co.uk/hansel-gretel-early-concepts) you will see he had patches but I was too lazy to add them. I will add the patches and I think I should perhaps give him some dirt too, like on his knees and under his finger nails etc.
Thanks for the reminder.
