This was way too long on the 2.5 todo-list, but effecting particle properties with textures is now once again possible! It's perhaps not the "effect anything with anything" solution I was thinking about at some point, but then again I'd rather not over complicate the current particle system with a complex system that can be far better handled with nodes in the future.

Yea! I've been waiting for "PAttr" to come back in some fashion, especially for hair. Vertex groups work nicely too, but with textures it can be so much more accurate...

Very good news ! I think that this will do the trick with grass animation. In the past I was very annoyed by texture refresh bugs in 2.49b, and I had to use 2.48 with a script made by an other user to force the refresh of the texture !
