Videotutorial: Create a Volumetric Candle in Blender 2.5

16

In this three-part CG Tuts+ videotutorial Gottfried Hofmann shows you how to create a convincing candle flame in Blender 2.5.

Gottfried writes:

The smoke simulation system within Blender 2.5 has recently received a huge amount of attention from both developers and users alike. As the builds continue, a lot of things have been fixed or improved, and there are also some exciting new features! In this brand-new series we will introduce almost all of these features in a single project – creating a candle with a volumetric flame. Let’s get started!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Thanks for the Plug, Bart! (I did not submit this, though)

banor: there are a lot of things you can do to the wick and inner wax if you want to improve the result. I did not want to make the tut even longer, so it's up to you :)

  2. I don't even bother with blender beta any more it crashes and slow down my computer.
I stay with 2.49 for now.I would like to add more, but I will end up cursing! LOL!

  3. i tried following the first video then the second one but cannot get to it
there seems to be a problem with the second video page ?

did anyone tested the second video ?

or is there another site for the second video where we can follow it ?

    Thanks and happy 2.5

  4. Second page works for me - did you try downloading the video? (yeah, CG Tuts+ allows that :)
If you want to watch in your browser try to search blip.tv for the tut...

  5. i tried with internet explorer and not working

can you give me the direct link to the second video and i'll try Google it instead may be that one will work better!

    thanks and happy 2.5

  6. Thank you. It is always interesting to see tutorials about Blender recent tools. By lack of time I still haven't switched to 2.5x, but I hope that I will do this coming year !

This said, for simple effects like a candel flame, there is a much easier way requiring very few computing power.

On the animation below, that I made for Christmas two years ago with 2.48 or 2.49 I used a simple flat mesh with procedural blend textures for the candel flame and several flat meshes for the wood fire. The meshes are animated by softbody and a wind effector and lit by few simple lamps. No node, no particle.

  7. would someone be kind enough to upload a file for this candle flame
cause i'm having problem to do the tut and get the right set up for the flame color and size

    i work with 33760
may be the smoke sim is not bery god in this version!

    Thanks and happy 2.5

  8. Hello Everyone,

If we could only light our Spiritual Light within us all, instead of cursing the darkness of the world out there, we could illumnate the whole world with it!

    Short, though beautiful video!

Thanks for posting it. This candle in the video reminds us of what we've got inside, the "candle" that no one or nothing can ever extinguish it if we do not want it to.
