Hi all!
Maintaining BlenderNation takes a lot of time and energy, and I've decided to take a short break from writing new articles this week. I won't leave you without your daily dose of Blender news though, but this week YOU will be responsible for writing and publishing news.
Users of 'Digg' will be familiar with the concept: you submit your own news (with an image if you like) and let other readers 'vote' your article up. If enough people like it, it'll appear on the homepage. Check it out: BlenderNation Your News.
This is also the first time that we'll be showing our new logo, designed by Virgilio Vasconcelos!

Love the concept - and the now Logo too, btw..
Surely an interesting test.
Cool logo, love it. Though the "BlenderNation" typo sucks; but that's personal taste. Enjoy your well-deserved break!
a very useful feature that shows how popular blender is and how ressourcerful it is too!
although i don't use blender because of lack of time i keep following its devellopment for more than 3 years now and always keeping myself updated thru' blendernation
i have one wish nonetheless: blender python scripting lessons for newbies (how to write python scripts for blender in other terms).
peace!
hi everyone im new to blender nation ... , btw nice logo , i like it thanks and keep up the good work .
You could be lazy and leave this running all year!!! :-)
You guys deserve a break. Have a good one!!
Oh, ha, I was thinking the change was permanent. IMO you should have forwarded the domain to the "new" site during this temporary change.
interesting :-D
well, Happy Holidays everyone! (ok, it's the 28th, but it still counts)
This is absolutely amazing work Bart. I love the new website and the digg look and feel. Everything seems so slick and best of all: it works! The best news IS at the top and all the cogs seem to be in motion. Nicely done!
I remember seeing a sneak peak of the new logo on your iPhone at the conference and I'll say it again, "It looks great!"
Will this eventually replace the BlenderNation homepage? I'm guessing it would save you hours of work!
Please, don't add all these news in the RSS feed.
I may unfollow BlenderNation if so.
So far, so good! There's much more news coming in now then would have on the regular site. Let's see how this progresses...
@Jeremiah Warren: I just finished that. I've set it up so that if you try to access the homepage from an 'old' BN article you can still see it. If you just go to BlenderNation.com you'll see the new YourNews section.
@redbyte: thanks :) I still have a few worries about the new setup: spam prevention isn't as strong as in WordPress, and there is no comment notification yet. I'll have to look deeper in to that. But yes, if this works just as well or better than the original setup then I'll certainly consider it.
@Steren: sorry to hear that!
I think voting should be limited to registered users. After all, you have to register to comment anyway...
This will avoid people to come and do stealth marketing/spam by asking their friends or zombified machines to click on "vote".
@aws357: yes, I agree. It was on initially but during the first few days there are just too few registered users to make it work. So for now you can vote anonymously, but I'll change that once there is a reasonably sized user base.
Oh dear, what a disappointing new logo and identity, both in concept and execution. It's not going to help change the perception of Blender as tool for amateurs and hobbyists. The blender.org website now looks very slick and professional. It will be a shame if BlenderNation's new identity isn't of a similar standard.
There must be many professional 2D graphic designers among the Blender community. Why not have an open call for logo designs before committing to one?
@Jon: sorry to hear you feel that way. A lot of time and effort was put into it, but you can never satisfy everyone, of course..
I was not expressing a subjective feeling of dissatisfaction. The logo is self evidently weak and the amount of time and effort involved is irrelevant. But I won't waste time with an objective critique. If you genuinely think it is of the same standard as the Blender logo then I'm afraid you lack the visual discernment to accurately assess it. Unfortunately your reply suggests that the matter is not open for debate.
Sorry to sound arrogant. However, I do work in design and branding which may add validity to my comments.
BTW why does the logo disc have a width to height ratio of 1.079 ?
Best wishes to BlenderNation for 2010. It is a great resource and very much appreciated.
looks much like Blender .
I wait when have just national television free submit shows ...
well...not at the feeling for post a full idea about.
Great, but I really hate the recaptcha system. I mean, why have it if you need to be logged in to make an article?
@Jon, don't be a jerk, send in an exemple to Bart and see if he likes it more, you can change more then you think if you try. even if it is a small thing as the logo, or a mockup for a better website.
If you think you have what it takes, then please, share it with your free time. Like Bart is trying to do.
You can even send in an link to an mockup through the new news system and se if pepole likes it with the vote feature.
Yeah, this is fantastic Bart! I hope that will this new system stay as default!
2008 merry christmas... 2008? really?
omg my clock is one year forward!!!
Oops! Time to restore the original headers :)
Hi Bart,
The vote system is good, but I'm a bit disapointed by one thing that is only the fault of members, not yours : Even with many vote on a topic, very few people leave some comments !
You can find very interesting articles with tens of votes and not even one comment...
People are very lazy. More you give them, less they do !
how much longer will this go on?
Hi Bart,
I like the new system! But what I don't like is design of the new webpage... it just doesn't feel like blendernation.com. I suggest that you add at least the blue header again.
@ROUBAL
i don't feel like registering only to leave a comment on a news site..
this quick anonymous way of commenting is more convenient..
thanks anyway blendernation.. at first i thought the way YourNews work wouldn't go very well, but i was mistaken
@Everyone: please see my new post: BlenderNation's Future.
