2.49 RC2 released

blender-logoThe Blender Foundation just released Release Candidate 2 for version 2.49. There don't seem to be any RC2 specific releasenotes yet, so I can't tell you anything about it ;-) Also not all builds for all platforms are available yet - these will probably be added as soon as possible. Still - good luck testing!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. good. The build i need is win 7 64-bit (or at least 64-bit). I don't mean just the installed version, the installer is nice because it puts the icon and stuff.

i just installed 2.48 yesterday lol

  2. Very nice. So far so good. Will test with a lot of files and see if I can break anything. If I can't, then all is well. If I can, then I will report back and we will have more fun with 2.49.

  3. @Nezumi, indeed, you need Python 2.6.2 :)

Related to the installer for 32bit, it still needs to be updated for the new python version check. For the 64bit version, I don't know if we are going to do an installer - but you can always create your own icon and program association for .blend-files. IIRC there is the -R or -r command-line option to Blender to register Blender for .blend files. (do blender -h to find out)

  4. I'm very excited with the new release, especially with Projection Painting. I've encountered a bug though, and have filed it to the Blender Bug Tracker. This same bug exists in Blender 2.49 RC1 by the way.

The bug happens when you attempt to paint on the edges of your UV mapped object, with bleed turned on in the Projection Paint options, an adjacent UV face to the one you're painting on will receive the bleed on one of it's edges.

I've tested this on different computers with different video cards (NVidia and ATI), but they are all Macs running Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard. Any Windows or Linux users experiencing this problem?

  5. Nice one, I've already tested RC1 for my usual bugs (missing velocity data on fluids and particles) and it initially seems ok. I'll test this one as well, maybe develop more tests for the newer updated fluid features as well.

    "What else could anyone need?"
    Mmmmm let me think :)
A reliable set of 9.04 intel video drivers that actually work on my netbook with blender?!

Ah, you mean platform wise I see. Soz :)

  6. The Bug I filed wasn't a bug after all, I misunderstood the intent of the Bleed option. Awesome release :) . Waiting for the final release :D

  7. I am looking forward to the final version.

I have started to collect parts for an i7. I intend to install only blender and gimp in 64 bit.

I hope a good 64 bit version is released after bug testing as I have a lot of work to do.

  8. Paul F. Chang on

I'm working on a fairly detailed sculpt. RC2 crashes much less than RC1 (or 2.48 for that matter). In fact I haven't had any crashes to date with RC2 while using the sculpt tools! Its still fairly slow, can't wait for the viewport updates...
