This Just In: Elephants Dream Wins UK Linux & Open Source Awards 2006

64

sms-ton.jpgWe reported earlier about the nomination of Elephants Dream for the UK Linux & Open Source Awards 2006. I just talked to Ton, who is in London right now, and he told me that Elephants Dream won, making Dreamworks' Over the Hedge and Sony Pictures Imageworks' Monster House bite the dust!

Looking at the list of sponsors and attendees, I'm sure that this was a GREAT opportinuty for him to bring Elephants Dream into the spotlights once again.

We're still waiting for pictures from the event (and especially the one of Ton in a suit!). Once they're in, I'll add them to this article.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. eh, what?

    ton is german?

    or are you all German

    Juhuuu, gewonnen!
Aber elephants dream war erst der anfang zur weltherrschaft! Harhar!

  2. @elcazze: Gewonnen is Dutch for Won.

Very good News. I like the dutch parts of blendernews etc. (Like in the intervieuw with Ton)

ps: wil there be a nl.blendernation.com too?

  3. Superb. "Best Use of CGI With Linux/Open Source". Can't say I'm surprised though. I'm not really sure what the other nominees (Dreamworks and Imageworks) are doing there (because they ran Red Hat?) - ED was the only one of the lot to use *only* (minus the sound production) OSS tools *AND* they released their creation freely as well.

If you ask me they should've gotten also a "special mention" or something like that as well..

  4. Yeah! :o)
...ok now how about the Blender Studio that no one wants to talk to me about at Blender artists..I can't believe there is so little interest in that.
It looks like there is going to be an Orange 2 anyway but what about the bigger picture so to speak..

Congratulations to all Orange team and contributors to the project.

  5. SuperCool News!

We wait for Ton... in a suit!
    ahahahahhaha :-) :-) :-)

Really cool, i'm very happy for this award, a big opportunity for Blender, the Orange team, and all the community, the real core of his incredibile force.

  6. *lol*
Gewonnen is the first dutch word, witch is absolutely equivalent with german!
    It's the same word!
I mean, sure, there are many very simmilar words, but it's the first one, which is spelled absolutely the same way, letter for letter!

ED won! ED hat gewonnen! ED rules! ED führt!

  7. Somebody's got some sense out there - Elephant's Dream is the best CG I've ever seen to be honest. And I've seen a lot of them. Happy Feet looks great from the ads but Elephant's Dream still seems many times more advanced - years ahead of other CG.

  8. @MagicMyshu: stop smoking :) More over, Blender is a short, not a movie.
Don't get me wrong, i like this short and here and defend it.

    Back to topic:

    Proficiat voor de overwinning Ton!

    cheers:

ps: sorry, mijn nederlands is zeer roestig en, bovendien, van Brussel. hehe

  9. Cool news indeed, and great publicity, but does anyone think that perhaps a *Linux and Open Source* group might have some slight bit of bias towards our project? ;) I don't want to be a downer, but I also don't really think it's that amazing. :)

  10. I totally agree with Matt #1. Over the Hedge was more accesible, better animated, and on a similar par for writing as compared to elephants dream.

  11. Woah! congratulations!

I'm very happy for Ton, The Orange Team and everyone who worked on Elephants Dream or made it possible !

It is really desserved and a very good thing for Blender !

  12. @matt & Matt

I think the award is given for using open source. ED uses the most open-source or on the best way (such as contributing code while working on the short)

Indeed over the hedge was a better blockbuster but has used lesser open-source.

  13. Coooool..!
It must be great for the ED-team, ED gets more and more known around the world..
Saying: "I was animator/modeller/whatever on ED" will get you a job like this *snap*
It's really great. Good for Blender and open source in general too!

    Congratulations!

  14. Holy sh1t. Steven Spielberg's Monster House just got pwned by ...a bunch of blenderheads?

Why are they even nominated? I don't think hollywood is that big when it comes opensource?

  15. Jogai, I know the award is for using open source, that's why I think it's a nice fun curiosity, not really anything to be bragging about, especially in "Blender R00lZ!!!11!" threads on cgtalk. It's not like any of those other movies were 'competing' to try and get the most open source usage, and neither were we. We used open source because we wanted to, and thought it was the right thing to do for our goals for the project. I'm sure the other companies have their own practical reasons for using open source.

So I personally think this award is fun, but not very interesting or meaningful. It's like somebody making an award for 'Best Dutch CG animated short involving two characters named Emo and Proog in a surreal machine'. Of course it's still nice to have the award in any case though :)

  16. phreak of nature on

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    CONGRATULATIONS GUYS
also a big kudos to linux user because this is actually a opensource OSCAR so it means that we beat the big guys
    Cheers to every one involved

  17. basse r0Xx0rZ!!!!111

anyway, i do agree this isnt so much of a special (but nevertheless surprising) award. it's nice to see though that at least one part of the OSS community accepted us! :)
