Fully rigged character for free (as in free beer)

CuteBear - Free poseable characterFree software is a great thing as long as it enables us to keep our hands on tools that otherwise would be impossible to try/learn/use (mainly for economical resons), but sometimes free contents created for/with such tools are even more usefull since they supply us with something that can be used as a template for our projects; when those contents are high quality ones they become a great educational resource, and this is the case for CuteBear, a fully rigged character created by Tommy Helgevold (aka Joongle) and released on elYsiun for the pleasure of all the animators-wanna-be around here.

Tommy writes:

CuteBear is a fully rigged Inverse Kinematics Character that is fully poseable.

It comes complete with eye control (you can free the eyes from the camera, they currently gaze at the camera as it is now and assign it to a separate object. You just either grab the colored IK-constraints (palms, feet, head) and position them where you want them. You can further pose the bones by grabbing them and rotating them into the wanted position without destroying the IK chain. The rig even features the new Constraints by Brecht so they won't override the humanly possible positions when you pose by IK. This is practical if you need quick keys with your animation and don't want to fiddle with posing too much. You can turn on/off X-ray of the bones as you please, but it's more practical to have them on - therefor I've left them on for your convinience.

It comes with basic shading & lightning, you may modify the character as you please. but if you decide to distribute the modified character - remember to include the copyright notice and credit me for the base character - while crediting yourself for the additions. You should also include a copy of the ORIGINAL model
with your new distribution. You may NOT add further copyrights to your own additions. All copyrights to this character remains with Tommy Helgevold.

The character where created for the Blender community promotional and educational purposes only.

A big thanks to Tommy ;-)

  1. @Robin: yes, it has been on Elysiun for a while but many of our readers don't have the time to keepp up with them. For those people, this is a (hopefully) a usefull article.

  2. Bart & lox - please don't stop posting because people say 'This is old'. I am one of those who love BlenderNation as it is quick and easy to read. Elysiun has some good stuff on it, but also a lot of rubbish and I just don't have time to read through it all...

    Great stuff!

  3. @Simes- yes, this is true- the news on blendernation are compact and easy to read- on elysiun every noob is posting information and not everybody has the right skills to write good and understandable news.

News: I always create non-organic models with blender, and so i did`nt work with rigging- until today. cool thing- i will test it. thanks

@Bart: When is the Blender "February Gallery" ready? ...please don`t understand this wrong- i don`t want to annoy you...but can`t wait to see it! :o)

  4. Yes, this is old news, I've posted it in the DB last week but... You have to take in account that now we're in five writing on this site and every news has a priority/importance level that make us publish it immediately or after a certain amount of time. Is what happens in all the news site around the world and is why we supply you readers with a Version Tracker sidebar now, to publish fast highlights in realtime (well this and stopping Eugene from bloating the hompage LOL). There's another fact you've to consider, apart from being a news site BNation wants to be a repository, a tool that any BlenderHead can find anything about Blender at any time (past, present or future), in achieveing this goal there's no space for "old" and "new" labelling service ;-)

  5. This rig is cool but very difficult to work with. The whole body moves whenever you move one joint. Also, for some reason the feet aren't keyframing location, only rotation...

I wonder how those Orange guys do it.

  6. i would like to try out "Cutebear" but every time i go to the 'forum' i get "Sorry. The administrator has banned your IP address. To contact the administrator click here"

clicking on the contact button gives me the same message.

anyone know whats up with dat?
