Sectioning a mesh with nodes

Sectiontutor-012Mats Halldin describes a great technique to visualize cut-outs of objects using node materials.

Mats writes:

In this tutorial we will create a section passing through a simple object using material nodes. We'll then have a look at various ways of combining several sections into more complex cut-outs, useful for, for example, architectural sections.

    very good technique…
to further develop the nodes in blender might be useful to be able to combine a set of nodes to form a new (parametrizzable) node

Sorry for the daft question. Why is this handy compared to using a simple boolean modifier?

@Jimmy Volatile: It can be applied to multiple objects simply by assigning them the right material. Also, you can have complex mesh and a complex cutting texture without slowing down rendering much.
