Blender in Environmental Advertising
My name is Daniel Houghton. My connection to the Blender community began a couple of years ago when I began work on a short film called “Pitch” for the 2008 Blender Conference. I’m happy to say, that piece has allowed me to transition to a job where I am using Blender on a regular basis for my work.
Here is a short piece that I released today for an environmental group called Brighter Planet. All motion graphics were designed in Blender.
I’m submitting this because I believe it is worthwhile to show very simple uses of the application alongside all of the amazingly complex projects underway. I love the complex projects that Blender artists are able to create. I hope they never stop. But I also wish to speak a word for simplicity.
There is power in it.

You say all the “excel graphics put in motion” is actually done with Blender?
^^ I would love to see a tutorial about that (can be useful to design HUD for other projects…) or make a “Terminator Vision” effect…
Well done! I wouldn’t have guessed it was done in Blender to be honest. Not that Blender isn’t capable of great things – most things of this nature are done in After Effects or other industry ‘standard’ software.
I’d also love a tutorial or two on how you made this!

I’d love to see your workflow as well. I’ve been trying to replace AE with Blender (for professional work) for sometime now but the truth is that AE is just soooo much faster, especially when it comes to things like masking. If it could only do that better I’d be using it all the time.

@Bastian: Sorry, but do you have any REAL scientific evidence for that carbon stuff? (I guess you have none). ;)
Daniel: Great piece. I’ve done some 2D work for an environmental organization (mostly print work) but would love to be able to do some work in blender for them (currently they are one of my bigger clients, so the added work would be great).
I’ve done a little bit of motion graphics with blender for other clients and would love to see how you did this, too.
Oh, please don’t let this turn into an off topic debate on global warming.

Wow. Great stuff. Everything blends well together. Now I’m even more inspired.

I’ve had a look at the blends. One thing I can’t work out is how you did the numbers in foot 2?
I can see it’s a text object but how do you make the digits change?
There is a script called carbon_calc. You should see it if you open up the Text Editor. This calculates the sum of the three little bar graphs and changes the text object to reflect that value.
It’s a good video except that carbon footprint is a hoax and is a tax on living. Soon everyone will have carbon meter mask and carbon meter diapers to measure how much carbon we breath out or flagellate. If we breath out too much carbon central command will automatically shut down our breathing.

I’d be the first one out in some “earth friendly” hobbit type home and have often sung the praises of drastic overhauls and more harmonious living, but NOT ones that tax everyone for an essential component of life and reward big business and their partners in the government in a giant control scheme. I mean you DO realize that the “evil corporations” who “everyone” always rails against are the same ones who will benefit from this.
The irony is strong in this one.
