Short Film: "Post-Human" with Blender VFX

Michael Eng writes:

I’d like to share a project I recently completed work on. It is a proof-of-concept sci-fi short from David Simpson based on his best selling “Post-Human” anthology.

I provided all visual effects on the project, making use of Blender in several shots. The opening 2 shots were camera tracked and animated in Blender. I also used Blender for the “Tron” style shot of the helmet constructing itself, as well as all shots of the main character flying.

Comps were done in After Effects making use of several tools from videocopilot.net. Hope you enjoy!

  1. Wow, superb. Great quality and an emotional story well told...

I still wonder, why people don't stick with blender for compositing - maybe there is something that has to be improved in Blenders workflow or some quick tools are missing? I never used AE as it's non-free, but so many people create awesome stuff in Blender and composite it in AE afterwards.

    • @Samoth After Effects is awesome for quick composite, 2D Motion graphics and really speed things up when you work alone or in a small team.
Composite in Blender, it's like... ok... but still not close with the power of tools like Natron (open-source), Nuke, AE...

    • Thanks Samoth!
Granted, Blender definitely has some fantastic tools for compositing. However, After Effects along with a certain choice plugins drastically speed up my workflow. The Neat Video noise reduction plugin allows me to create renders in Blender with far fewer samples and simply clean up the noise afterwards. My typical render times are cut by 75%!!! Another alternative to After Effects(and in many ways, more powerful) is Blackmagic's Fusion. This program is very similar to the cost prohibitive Nuke, and there is a free version available! Most top plugins, including Neat Video, make versions compatible with Fusion.
      Thanks again, and happy rendering!

  2. It's amazing what an influence the music for The Terminator series has had on sci-fi films. I could have sworn I was listening to T2, especially on the end credits ;-)

  3. Excellent work, its an interesting story, the sets are great, acting camerawork and lighting works well and the visual effects from blender are spot on too!
