The BlenderNation weekend contest has been away during the vacations, but now it’s time to bring it back! I’ve teamed up with 3D Hubs, the local 3D printing network. Their mascot, Marvin, is in need of some adventure and could use some superpowers!
Marvin (who has his own Twitter account) says:
Hi Blender-folks! I'm Marvin. I'm not a human, but people love 3D printing me and showing me off.
Rules:
- Download Marvin.blend to get started.
- Add any kind of accessory or pose.
- Keep the model 3D printable (mainly, make sure surfaces are closed and parts are not too thin). For more info, see the ‘Blender for 3D Printing’ course on the Blender Cloud.
- Keep the result ‘family friendly’ ;-)
As with previous contests, post your submissions on the comments and vote up your favorite entry (in case of doubt, I'll ignore anonymous votes). The winners are picked on Tuesday, and the top-3 winners will receive $30, $20 and $10 in free 3D printing on 3DHubs.
Have fun!

Here's a link to the model that I found on my own....not sure it's the same one we're supposed to use, but looks the same.
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:215703/#files
Oh, it's a .stl file, and the instructions say 'download the marvin.blend', so it's probably somewhere else in a .blend format, but I found the stl first and stopped looking.
yeah! if you want we play, give us the marvin.blend! the stl have an awful topology
FREE MARVIN SOURCES
The .blend version has the same topology from what I see.
Oh well.
I was considering running Marvin through ZBrush Dynamesh but I wasn't sure if it was against the rules to use that kind of task outside of blender. I wasn't' really happy with the remesh modifier results but I guess it will have to do for now.
Yeah, I tried to use zremesher to fix it but it wasn't much better. I even tried to re-topologize it manually, and it just wasn't worth it. I even considered just making it from scratch as someone did below. Once it sunk in that the 'contest' was essentially to make an accessory (or give him super powers, which I'm still not sure how you'd 3-D print most of the ideas that come to mind) I just forgot about the topology. Even though the edge split modifier 'breaks' Marvin, I didn't really care because that wasn't the contest.
I was convinved that any idea I came up with, printed at the needed scale, would lose any details, but I was wrong. The one e5dy printed for someone else came out much better than I thought it would. Kinda makes me with I had stuck with some of my original ideas instead of going with a bad idea and not being happy with it. I doubt I'll even post mine.
Sheesh WordPress, thanks for eating my link! The guys sent me their STL file and I've prepared a .blend - the link is in the post now.
ha ok, no source file :/ it's less fun
it's a real problem in the sharing today, we found a lot of stl files, but not the sources
I'm no expert by any means, so some of these 'tips' may be completely wrong, but might save some people a couple of minutes.
Fix the origin. It's nowhere near the geometry.
If you're going to use smooth shading and/or a subdivision surface modifier, use an edge split modifier first. (I don't think there'd be much need to use a sub-surf modifier, but I did test it just for kicks and noticed the result is awful without the edge split modifier)
The scene is set to blender render, which isn't a big deal, but might cause a tiny bit of confusion if you're used to opening blender with cycles as the default renderer.
Thought there was something else but it's eluding me at the moment.
Edge split will separate all of the edges, which is the one thing you absolutely CANNOT do when 3d printing.
Subserf just doesn't work well with this mode
Oh yeah, I was just thinking about rendering it with smooth shading, I completely forgot about the 'must be 3-D printable' part. Sorry.
actually this modele is very small and you don't have to subdivide it more
as you can see on the printings pictures on thingivers, the faces are totally smoothed by the printing resolution
The blue one looks exactly like it does in blender with flat shading, but yeah, I said using the subsurf was probably pointless. It's usually something I do with models to see if there are any vertices not connected or if something went wonky.
And yeah, as I said about the edge split modifier...I kinda forgot the requirement that it be 3-D printable. I was still caught up on topology/rendering issues, sorry. When I saw what smooth shading did to a simple render, I got caught up on it instead of accepting it. I suppose if it's tiny, it really doesn't matter.
the most important to stay in mind is the thickness, walls under 0.4mm (0.4 blender unit, 3D print takes the millimeter as base unit) are not printable and under 1mm very weak
http://www.pasteall.org/blend/31540
the same stl imported, but with a Blender UI optimized for 3D printing (1 blender unit = 1mm)

if he doesn't have super power, we give him one!
Very cool pose, but you might want to give him some colors and a background
First of all, Marvin needs a friend, together they'll rescue the world!
Companion cube! I missed you so much! Sorry I've thrown you into that oven back there in chamber 17. Can you forgive me? TT_TT
Ms. Marvin
Great shaders and light. Looks very authentic.
Ms. Marvin is my submission, hope I am not still a guest.
Hi everyone! here is my try, have a nice weekend!
I dont know why is post as Guest! it´s my try by the way...
Sorry for the triple post! it´s first time posting and using disqus, here is the another shot.
ho, cute!
not so easy to print, but in several parts it should be clean
Hi, this is my try: a visor! Modelled in Blender, printed on a Reprap Pro Huxley.
YAY! The weekend contests!
Super power: Water Power
Accessory: Trident and Water
First version is color second is no color
(For 3D printing the water will be removed)
Enjoy!
WIP Ninja Marvin!
It is probably a million miles away from being 3D printable, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Also I remodelled the base model to get better topology. So if anybody wants the remodelled one with unapplied boolean modifiers and quads everywhere, just let me know. Although it's not complete and not an exact copy.
it's totally printable, I love it, send me the file and I will print it
Awesome!!! Glad you like it! Just gonna do some fixes(and get a bit of sleep) :)
http://www.pasteall.org/blend/31572
Finally done lol. All the parts are loose, because I wasn't sure if I should boolean merge them or simply join everything. The key hole is also different from the original.
http://img.soleil42.fr/Marvin_Ninja.jpg
like I've said, totally printable
for the loose parts, Cura the open sources slicer have an option "combine everything" that perfectly do the job in this case
http://img.soleil42.fr/Marvin_Ninja_frightening.jpg
thanks for the blend ;)
That turned out much better than I thought it would. I got caught up trying to make things one solid piece, and/or using existing geometry to make something else (which the topology ruined of course). My non-experience with actual 3-D printing certainly inhibited my progress.
in some point you was right to try to make it solid, some years ago, the slicer software was not able to slice correctly several parts one in others, and in some cases, when you need a cavity inside your object, the option "combine everything" doesn't work
btw, I think with this little contest, you will can experience 3D printing ;)
if you pass at Paris a day, I will give you this print
Simply amazing! Seeing something that is in the digital domain right there in reality is awe inspiring and surreal! Thank you so much, it's really an eye opener. :)

superpower: he can now say Hi
I like concept, and printed effect... even it is simple suit...
Thanks for my next inspiration... The Marwin War Mech Suit.. :D of course out of the competition ;) just for exercise
And please do some suit mod for "Andre" model it deserve :)
This is my modelling exercise... At least...
Marvin have some magic power in him self, that blow my imagination out..., i always want to make some printable stuff. Even if i'm not 100% sure that is printable...
But concept is that, that orange parts should be printed separately. And one figure concept / one solid mesh... "Because i'm Marwin!!" ;)
e5dy Thanks for Marvin.blend file, that save me some headache
Happy Blendeing to All
Umm, hi Bane (Batman).
I like B-man, and it is kind of inspiration, but no logo involved... i looked in to Marvin soul and there was something dark inside... ;)
Just for fun!
=)
Here is mine. I was actually going to give him laser-vision but I eventually decided to go with freeze ray eyes because it seemed a lot cooler (no pun intended) with a modified frost shader I had leftover from another project. I originally had a gradient background with a lot of lights before deciding on relying heavily image lighting because I am terrible at lighting things manually. my animation wasn't the cleanest but because the GIF framerate I let a lot of mistakes slide. The first version looked so bad that I was about to quit before I gave it another try.
I forgot to show an Image of the mesh for 3D printing. (I don't own a 3D printer so I guess I will just show the OpenGL Render.)
Wasn't gonna post this, but thought someone might at least get a giggle out of it. It's not a super power, and even farther from being a 'proper' accessory, but....
It's Carvin!
Pretty sure it would be 3-D printable, but it's solid, so certainly not 'proper'. The tires started out as a spaceship, until I realized my idea for a 'bubble dome' wouldn't 3-D print, or at least not transparent like glass, so it turned into a tire. Not sure why an alien would have a car (with no steering wheel of course) but since he doesn't have arms, his 'super-power' is driving a car with no arms/steering wheel. Kinda hard to print 'telekenisis'.

Not sure why your image doesn't show, but I kinda like your 'Iron Marvin'. It does look like your image is hosted on discus, so not sure what went wrong. Thought maybe you posted it somewhere else and linked to it, but even then it usually shows the linked image in the post.
Weird enough it shows now. Probably I shouldn't have tried to delete and repost :-S
I have the same problem all the time, you just need to give it a few minutes and refresh the browser. I'm not sure what it is with blendernation but I don't have that kind of problem on other disqus forums.

Aaargh. I hate Disqus. Sorry for the multiple posts.. The picture didn't show up so I tried again and again...
Think Bart will tell you he can't delete any posts unless something has changed. It's probably not a big deal since they were all posted so close together. It's worse when someone posts something, and thinks it didn't post, and people vote for it, then they post another, and people vote for that one.....
If you do get votes on different 'posts', Bart will just add them together, but again, doubt anyone voted for any in the last few minutes.
done!
Here is my contribution solarpaneled, Marvin
Ah.... Someone beat me to it. Oh well, here's my Iron Marvin!
Wow great work so far everyone! I also love seeing those 3D prints pop up here :)
I repost my entry picture, cause Disqus hide it and show the second image first ;)
and this other image with Andre Strydom's entry (same reason, disqus hide it -_-)
Is this really printed or photorealistic rendering?
this is really printed, on Ultimaker
Marvin has a weapon called 'gada'. He's got a cape too. He says 'love them or hate them, but you should always protect them'!.
Hey everyone, due to marvin's lack of hands the best i could come up with was giving him a rocket shoe to kick evil's butt!
I think it could be printed with some adjustments and probably using a printer that allows supporting material (i'm not an expert , but my printer should arrive in a month yay)
come on disqus show the image lol
Well, here's my render. Marvin's superpower "Binocular-Spacer-Rays" transforms ideas into real objects. Isn't it fantastic?
Nice Job!
Uuuuh. Can he make a 3d printer that prints more Marvs? That would be awesome - and probably the end of the world - but still awesome!
im still a guest?
No, you aren't
Hi,
Maybe it's too late, but anyway.
Here's Dr Octopus Marvin !
Just in case you guys missed it, the winners have been chosen!

Pretty cool work everyone!
Hi! What kind of 3d printer you have printed so fine surface?
Pick from these superpowers, I guess.
