Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
For the first time ever, our weekend contest inspiration comes from a poem. StealthHawk writes:
This obviously comes from the story "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
So entries should just be about epic tragedies on any scale :)
Thanks,
StealthHawk
Post your work below (attach an image), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

WOOHOOOO!!!! Im so in!!!!!!! :D
Finishing up my render now :D
Kinda topical considering the standoff in Ukraine right now :)
LeGore :)
Would have loved to add textures, but am quite short on time this weekend. Hope you like it - and have a good laugh!
Thats epic!!!!!!!! :D
Here's my entry, "Battlefield at Sunset." Great theme!
Does anyone recall its use in "The Blind Side"? this poem was used as a football metaphor! Just an inspirational thought... :)
Here is my entry called "The Forgotten Scars". Really great theme choice!
Why did my image not upload? It's a .jpeg, does it need a different format? File size?
Never mind, the original image was to big i think. Here it is! (hopefully)
cool, glad to hear you sorted it out!
Yeah, I had forgotten that rendering it at 1440P made a really big file size, thankfully photoshop has a convert to web option.
That is a fantastic job with the grass there.
Thank You! :D The grass was rendered at 20000. Nearly killed my computer, but came out looking great!
This is mine.
Thats cool! Kinda reminds me of TES 4: Oblivion :D
Hi,
600 dead go to heaven!
Hi Guys
Maybe it dont fits the theme very well, but it was a epic tragedy!
An epic tragedy it was! Good composition :) I like this!
Thank you Thomas :)
Does anyone have any tips for file size, type, etc? Whenever I upload an image, it looks compressed.
Yeah Disqus does that unfortunately. Feel free to add a link to the original file though!
Here's my entry.
Here's my entry for the contest.
I'll go for small scale tragedy with mine.
I accidentally made a double post somehow under a Guest account. Can Mod remove it?
No problem, done!
My literal entry
Charge of the low poly brigade ... "Charge for the guns"
Using Blender 2.70RC1 and cycles
Box modelling of very low poly horse, rider and gun crew (cos not so much time to do anything more!)
Only simple cycles shaders, but interesting using the cycles volume shader.
Enjoy!

Ok here is my entry. Now i know the subject is based on epic tragedies. And everyone has done a good job. I have taken my render to a different perspective of Tragedies. Nearly 20,000 people die every year from drug overdose so in support of D.A.R.E this is my call to everyone to support the causes that are against drugs. Hope everyone likes the image i rendered in Yafaray!
Hi!!!!! The truth is that it had decided not to participate in more contests .... but I think this is becoming an addiction ... lol
This is what has inspired me this week theme. The pose in the form of pictures and decided to make an interpretation of a picture...
Me and you both! I also suffer from a mild "Blender Nation Contest"-addiction... :) Wasn't supposed to participate, but just did anyway. I like your image! :)
There are far worse addictions to have. I like to think of it as dedicated time to work on a portfolio piece. That way I'm being doubly productive :D
I must agree with you :) I think these contests are a brilliant way to learn to be more productive. And of course it also adds value to our portfolio's.
Lol I think I know exactly which picture you were using, I'm pretty sure its one of the ones I was using as reference too :)
Lol Believe it or not, yes, I think we used the same reference image.
And honestly, I think your interpretation is spectacular. It's awesome! Congratulations.
Well I hope I'm not too late. Here's my simple entry.
If anyone is interested, here is a timelapse for this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1OHUxiKN9g
I really enjoyed the timelapse. It gave me a chance to see a lot of the really nice details that got a little lost in the final render. A little DOF goes a long way. ;)
Hi,
here is my entry, good luck to all!
Something about this image is very compelling to me. I think it might be that it has a very pleasant color palette. I'm curious as to how you made the ground texture. it looks procedural, but not like any of the ones I've ever made.
Hi Eric,
thanks for your words. The entry is almost pure Blender Internal with some postproduction and a flare done in Cycles. Tried the atmospheric features with the fill lamp that lits the areas shadowed by the main lamp.
So the ground texture is Blender Internal and procedural indeed. It's from a material I've done some time ago just to illustrate to my students how powerful and at the same time complex can be a material.
This one is not that complex, at the end, the trick is a Voronoi texture with the settings shown in the image. I wanted to mimic the ancient walls of Troy or Ilium already destroyed, and the kind of dry, mediterranean landscape that is there and in many other places, near my home too.
Hope you'll find useful.
Oh nice. You know, I've been using Cycles for so long now that I'd completely forgotten how powerful the procedural textures from Blender Internal actually are. I really wish there was a way to use that interface with Cycles (maybe there is and I just haven't looked hard enough).
Temptation win this weekend...

Decided a little late to make a contribution, but here it is! Hope you like it! :)
Poor Guys hehe
So I got really excited with this weeks contest and went a little bit overboard. That and losing the hour threw me off, anyways after many hours of loving work I present "The Charge" Based loosely on the poem, but taking a few creative liberties. Enjoy.
I like how everything is in motion! Well done : )!
really cool action momentum combined with the low poly stuff!
Another low-poly master piece. :) I love the motion in this!
