Weekend Contest: 'Half a League'

50

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

For the first time ever, our weekend contest inspiration comes from a poem. StealthHawk writes:

This obviously comes from the story "The Charge of the Light Brigade".

So entries should just be about epic tragedies on any scale :)

Thanks,

StealthHawk

Post your work below (attach an image), and vote for your winner. The winner will get a post on monday, and will get to pick next weekend’s contest theme. Have fun!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Would have loved to add textures, but am quite short on time this weekend. Hope you like it - and have a good laugh!

Does anyone recall its use in "The Blind Side"? this poem was used as a football metaphor! Just an inspirational thought... :)

    My literal entry
Charge of the low poly brigade ... "Charge for the guns"
    Using Blender 2.70RC1 and cycles
Box modelling of very low poly horse, rider and gun crew (cos not so much time to do anything more!)
Only simple cycles shaders, but interesting using the cycles volume shader.

    Enjoy!

Ok here is my entry. Now i know the subject is based on epic tragedies. And everyone has done a good job. I have taken my render to a different perspective of Tragedies. Nearly 20,000 people die every year from drug overdose so in support of D.A.R.E this is my call to everyone to support the causes that are against drugs. Hope everyone likes the image i rendered in Yafaray!

  5. Hi!!!!! The truth is that it had decided not to participate in more contests .... but I think this is becoming an addiction ... lol
This is what has inspired me this week theme. The pose in the form of pictures and decided to make an interpretation of a picture...

    • Something about this image is very compelling to me. I think it might be that it has a very pleasant color palette. I'm curious as to how you made the ground texture. it looks procedural, but not like any of the ones I've ever made.

      • Hi Eric,
thanks for your words. The entry is almost pure Blender Internal with some postproduction and a flare done in Cycles. Tried the atmospheric features with the fill lamp that lits the areas shadowed by the main lamp.

So the ground texture is Blender Internal and procedural indeed. It's from a material I've done some time ago just to illustrate to my students how powerful and at the same time complex can be a material.

This one is not that complex, at the end, the trick is a Voronoi texture with the settings shown in the image. I wanted to mimic the ancient walls of Troy or Ilium already destroyed, and the kind of dry, mediterranean landscape that is there and in many other places, near my home too.

        Hope you'll find useful.

        • Oh nice. You know, I've been using Cycles for so long now that I'd completely forgotten how powerful the procedural textures from Blender Internal actually are. I really wish there was a way to use that interface with Cycles (maybe there is and I just haven't looked hard enough).

  6. So I got really excited with this weeks contest and went a little bit overboard. That and losing the hour threw me off, anyways after many hours of loving work I present "The Charge" Based loosely on the poem, but taking a few creative liberties. Enjoy.
