Tube Open Movie Internship

tube_promo_sml

The Tube Open Movie Project is offering several internship positions.

Fateh writes:

Calling all students (18+), recent graduates, and professionals wanting to ply their 3D skills in libre software:

Join Bassam and the URCHN crew this summer on the Tube Open Movie production, hosted by the Bit Films animation incubator at Hampshire College, Massachusetts. Helmed by Chris Perry, formerly of Pixar and Rhythm & Hues, the program draws together a lot of talent, so although the internships are unpaid, it promises to be a very stimulating and fruitful space. These positions offer an opportunity to improve your skills, develop your reel, and make useful contacts in the industry. There is a possibility that housing can be offered.

The official internship period runs from Monday June 4, 2012 through Friday August 31, 2012. Applications are due (via email) no later than Thursday May 17, 2012 at 5pm (EDT). We understand that this may be short lead time for those needing to make visa and travel arrangements. Because the project is ongoing, the internship period is flexible; if in doubt, apply!

Although it may not provide as immersive an experience, we are open to considering very strong applicants to a remote internship. Remote interns would join the already global team using web-based project management software, SVN, video calls and IRC.

Please read carefully the open positions announcement and FAQ! Have more questions? Email us: [email protected]

      • Agreed! Of all possible internships out there for Blender projects, this is one that you really shouldn't pass up if you're able. Bassam is a real genius and a true pleasure to work with. Very few people have the dedication and creative spirit that he has. This likely an opportunity that would even be worth paying for rather than being paid.

          • Dude, have you even looked at what this guy has done? and it isn't like this is a huge corporate owned and run project, this is a small community driven piece that isn't exactly hugely funded, no one here is getting rich by participating.

And if you want to learn Blender there really isn't anyone else that can touch what he can teach.

          • Xnimator56 on

Do not lie to yourself. It does not mean you should work for free because someone knows more than you. Sorry I do not share those loser's thoughts dude.

          • They're saying that it basically the equivalent of getting a free class in a production environment. That seems worthwhile to me.

          • What about if you keep your stupid mouth shut eh? No one is talking to you in the first place, so act accordingly with the Forum's rules or leave.

          •  Nobody lies to anyone. Nobody has demanded that you should do it. You decide yourself.

You even may claim money. But a lot of those who *get* money for such work, have done an internship before, as it's most likely part of the education.

          • I'm not suggesting that this internship is for everyone. As Artigliphics pointed out, if you have high monthly expenses this would not be a good fit for you. However, if you're an aspiring artist with time on your hands and relatively few expenses then it could be an excellent opportunity!

With internships like this it's not just the immediate project that is valuable but also the skills you'll learn that you can continue to apply to numerous projects down the road for years on end.

I'm not promoting "free labor" or taking advantage of young artists. Having worked personally with Bassam before, and having been a part of the original team on this project I can say for certain this is not a project where you'll be taken advantage of or expected to put in more than you can.

Plain and simple, this internship is not for everyone, but for those that are able it could be a great experience all around.

          • Alekzsander on

IF I WERE  AN ASPIRING ARTIST , I WOULD DO  MY OWN PROTECT.
AND WORK FOR FREE NO THANKS  . MAYBE YOU CAN  APPLY FOR FREE.
PEOPLE WITH A LOT OF TALENT EVERYWHERE .

          • chromemonkey on

No shouting please.  Feel free to do you own "protect" at a reasonable volume.

Internships=education, NOT employment.  An employer wouldn't offer housing either.

Trolls are just coming out of the woodwork this week.

    • This internship gives the expirience and a chance to participate in a real project. Noone forces anyone. If you want to make money - you need to be able to do something. If your level is of a schoolboy - no monye for you. Not to mention that it's not right for an artist to chase for the money. The project gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills and have something to show others including your future employer. Do not act like some badass gods - make something good first.

    • Caleb Jones on

Excuse me, Did someone ask you where were you from? Delaware? Mars? Jupiter? No one cares.
INTERNSHIPS=FREE WORK FOR LOW SELF ESTEEM PEOPLE,,,, PERIOD !

  1. Artigliphics on

Agreed, an unpaid internship and you might have to pay for housing etc.  Is it worth the experience, to someone who hasn't any responsibilities, sure, but for those of us who have jobs, rent, car payments, this isn't very fruitful.  The thought of no income for that many weeks makes me cringe.  So, for the young lads out there, go for it.

      • Artigliphics on

I read that but it's for the stronger applicants, not everyone.  I'm not bashing the internship at all, just saying it's for the younger crowd who can afford to ricochet rabbit and not worry about the bills and expenses that come with everyday "adult" life.  It's a great way to get a great education and I would love to do it myself, just not in the position to.

    • Correct ! Who don't have responsibilities then? or Job?
ANSWERS: Only LOSERS my friend !

See my point? You are getting there little by little !

The above is the final word in my humble opinion!

Of course if you are far from the class it is not for you.

    • Very creative eh? Copying and pasting the same CLICHES used by the ones seeking for free work !
......."to participate in a real project......" What aren't other projects not for real? Come on !

"The project gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills and
have something to show others including your future employer."

Same OLD FASHIONED CLICHE, the truth is: No employer likes dudes working for FREE, it is like putting on a T-SHIRT saying "I AM A LOSER"     " I CAN'T SHINE BY MYSELF"  "I NEED SOMEONES' SHOULDER TO GET ATTENTION"

What a former-PIXAR guy is doing making these so called FREE Movies? Searching for some loser dudes to get his Pixar attention back? Come on, if you do it, do it is just for fun, don't tell newbies that they will have an enhaced experience helping them to get a job ! What would be this former PIXAR guy doing here in  the first place? If someone got hired,it will be him no you dudes ""FREE WORKERS"""

      • chromemonkey on

Name-changing troll obviously unclear as to the concept of what an internship is.  Did you demand to be paid for your dissertation in school too?

          • FreeWORK12 on

Animaticoide? I know him ! he is the guy who always said the truth no matter what ! This is a compliment that you think I am n his shoes ! Thanks so much !

          • Animaticoide on

Any problem with Animaticoide? Isn't him the guy who tells the truth no matter what?

      •  So, what are you doing here... a comunity driven software business forun? To your enlightening Blender was turned a free open source software by a bunch of "losers". Some of these losers working for free to making it the great tool it is.

        You say:

"No employer likes dudes working for FREE"

Where do you live and work? Greece, Spain, France...?

    • FreeXWORK56 on

DO NOT REPEAT THE SAME CLICHES OVER AND OVER.  If you just copied and pasted someones else comment it clearly means you have no creativity at all, that's the kind of guy this FREE project is looking for: IDIOTS with no creativity !

Bart, it looks like things like this are wasted on the people here.  I am given to wonder if they also requested to be paid by their schools for showing up in class, doing homework, labwork and taking tests.  Jiminy crickets.

  4. kurisutofu on

I wish I could do it ... Unfortunately, even if I had been able to live without a pay for the time required, I have no skill in blender so I would not be chosen :(
An internship is mandatory for a lot of school in my country so I don't see why people complain about that ... and as for the "Company don't like people who work for free" ... that's really stupid. Recruiting company care about your experience, what type of project you have worked on and with who, how long, your tasks, what you learned and what could be useful for them if they employed you.
Work a month with Steven Spielberg for free and let's see if you can't find work in the movie industry then! Or work for Warren Buffet and see if people won't trust you with money to invest!
Plus, the movie "pursuit of happiness" is a true story ...

    • FreeWORK12 on

Hello ? Hello? Is anyone here named   Steven Spielberg? No.,,,,,,,,,,,, right? So do not try to compare !  Yes Bassam made Mancandy great...but way too far from Steven Spielberg ! So you case is dismissed ! Sorry

  5. I wonder who pays the people coming here just to discredit other peoples projects, achievements and enthusiasm. Or are we actually getting all this rant for free? - Who is the bigger loser, the one who is being creative without getting paid or the one who wastes away his miserable life putting others down...

  6. Sounds like an awesome way to get your foot in the industry door with people like Bassam and Perry running the show.  If I wasn't working on my own pet project at the moment I'd be pretty interested in applying for the internship. Oh well, best of luck to those who apply! :)

    • FreeXWORK56 on

Sorry if you want to keep the truth hidden from the community:
No employer likes dudes working for free. When you work for FREE you declare yourself as a LOSER. You are pretty much saying: I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ON MY OWN.   I AM NOT A LEADER, I AM A FOLLOWER !  I RELY ON SOMEONE'S ELSE SHOULDER TO GET ATTENTION !  Get the facts guys, if you work for free do it for fun ONLY. And never tell to your employer such things because you will be categorized automatically as a LOSER !  TRUST ME !

  7. Jakenymous on

This is indeed a good opportunity to learn... my opinion about working for free is that you must be able to pick right project, project that helps you getting better... Someone has said (my cumbersome translation)  "wise people learn from each other, average people learns by their own experiences, and dumb people will not learn, because they know everything allready"

  8. I'm not in favor of a lot of "free" intern positions as often it's misused to get admin/office work done w/out much learning in process. However, those who are needing a boost of working knowledge with someone who appears to be excellent at there craft, this looks to be a great internship for a short period. I think whoever gets selected will be very fortunate!

on a side note... I see the troll bait has finally been removed :-)
