Hello everyone,

The 2012 Blender Summer Game Competition has begun!

Ever wanted to make your own game, but never had reason or inspiration? Well now's your chance to do just that! The Summer Competition is something that is made to inspire people to make games for the BGE, which will help the BGE's validity for good-sized projects. It will also help current users to learn new things in the BGE.

At the moment, there are no prizes lined up. Hopefully that will change. If you would like to contribute a prize, please contact me. My email address is listed below.

The rules:

  • All game development must be started after October 2011
  • No fan games
  • All content made prior to October 2011 must be available online
  • Must be finished by the end of 2012
  • A playable game must be released by the deadline
  • You do not need to release the files of your game
  • There will be a qualification round, depending on the number of entries
  • A judge panel will decide the winners
  • There are three categories: Fun Factor/Replayability, Graphics, Story
  • There is also a best in show
  • The version of blender used must be 2.6+
  • GLSL is optional, but recommended
  • The rules listed may change over time

The judges (so far):

  • mokazon
  • andrew-101
  • excalaberr
  • ideasman42
  • agoose77
  • moguri

Feel free to follow the facebook page and subscribe to the youtube channel for more updates.

Please email me or post on the thread if you have questions about the competition! (mjdietel *at* gmail *dot* com)

Thank you,

  1. Nice!  Will try my best to be able to participate...  Would be nice if someone from the community could point the way to a tutorial on how to export a runtime with the newest versions of Blender?  I have used the engine fine with the 2.49b, but I understood it was not possible to export the runtime yet?

  2. Hello Luis,
Open the preference panel. In the export addon panel, add the export runtime. You'll be able to export your game.

In what month will the qualification round take place?

  3. Urfoex - I'll see if I can get that setup. If you have neither G+ or FB, then youtube, email, and/or blenderartists thread should be enough.

hubberthus - yes, but, if you want to make a fan game - all you have to do is make it slightly different. Different characters, slightly different environment.

Abel van der Drift - this is a BGE competition. Only Blender Game Engine allowed.

    • The game I'm making now (since 2011 november) is based on a TV series, particularly a character's behavior from it. I borrow characters and an object from it, everything else like the environment and story is original, and the gameplay is unique. Changing the characters would cease it from being a fan game, but I don't really want that, because I'm a fan. :D

Just another thing: Usage of previously made content. I don't see any rules for it. I believe only freely available resources can be used. For example I'm using some mocap for actions from CMU Graphics Lab.

  4. Is the use of experimental Blender builds optional? For example the Harmony/BGE branch? I realize over time it will all be trunked, but there is always something better in the branch builds.
