Sketchfab is Joining the Epic Games Family
Sketchfab just announced their acquisition by Epic Games.
From the announcement:
We will remain an independently branded service with the same mission and vision, while working closely with Epic Games. We started collaborating with Epic earlier this year through an Epic MegaGrant, and are excited to accelerate those efforts. We are also already integrated with various Epic Games products like RealityCapture and ArtStation. We will maintain and expand our integration efforts with all creation tools and 3D/VR/AR platforms, so you can easily upload to and import from Sketchfab everywhere.
Lower fees for our Sellers
As part of our shared goal to make Sketchfab’s offerings more profitable to creators, we are reducing Sketchfab’s store fees to 12%, effective immediately.
Sketchfab Plus is now free
We are also making all the Plus plan features free, which means more uploads and larger file size at no cost. Current Plus customers will be automatically upgraded to our Pro plan at no additional cost, with the option to downgrade to free if they wish to do so. We will also be retiring the Business plan, and migrate current Business plan customers to our enterprise level features, at no additional cost. lol yeah, right…we will see how that turns out. Adobe and Substance anyone? :-/
Pretty well, actually. The Adobe acquisition is a couple years old, only recently did they start changing accounts over. But during that time Substance has continued to release features as it always has.
I like Epic more though, whatever they acquire tends to lower costs for members of that particular service as seen with free education center on Artstation and now more bang for the buck on Sketchfab.
Quixel and Epic would be a fairer comparison than Adobe and Substance, I think. Of course, you may have different opinions about that than I do, and that’s perfectly fine if so. I’m just saying since Epic did buy out a company before, we probably should look at that acquisition instead of judging them based on Adobe’s business practices.
Plus given the number of models on Sketchfab that are of either dubious legality or just straight up illegal, frankly it would probably be unwise of Epic to swallow Sketchfab up into their own store without some serious cleanup (who hasn’t claimed to have modeled the proprietary Daz base meshes in Blender/Maya/C4D/whatever and tried to release it as CC-BY illegally or worse sell it (also illegal) without even crediting Daz?).
I’d be more concerned they’d shut it down, like Adobe and Mixamo Fuse, or make it more professional and get rid of the amateurs and freebies, but if they were planning to do that, they probably wouldn’t be giving Plus features for free. I guess it’s a way for them to make money off 3D content sales outside the Unreal Ecosystem?
