I recently edited a cell phone picture in to an epic fantasy composite. Here's how I made the background in 3D using Blender.

  1. Have you ever tried sculpting the cut-out of the person to be more human-like so that you can use blender's lights to get a more accurate cohesion in lighting in the scene and the cut-out?

I did make a body double that was not visible in the render and used it for a cast shadow once when I had a light source behind the subject and didn't feel like painting and guessing in Photoshop. But ultimately the image of the subject is placed using photoshop, it's not visible in the render. And I'm not skilled in skulpting either.
