Bsurfaces New Year's Contest

11

Win a copy of the Bsurfaces addon with this contest.

Eclectiel writes:

To promote Bsurfaces among sculptors of the different 3D sculpting softwares, started a contest. There are 12 copies of Bsurfaces as prices. Even though it's aimed at sculptors anyone can participate with the same chances to win, and it's quite simple to be part of it.

The idea is quite simple: "if you know a 3D sculptor invite him/her to post a sculpture the BlenderArtists thread". If that sculpture is one of the winners, then both the author and the person who invited him/her win a Bsurfaces copy each.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I have been wondering about this for a while: Is BSurfaces gonna stop to work once bmesh goes into trunk? (Which I suppose is gonna be relatively soon ...)

    • It is an add-on which works on top of the current mesh system from what I understand. Therefore it is quite likely that it won't work anymore considering that the devs seem to have to reimplement even the standard tools for the new system.

  2. I'm searching for a way to convert text-curves from illustrator into nice meshes for a blender-cycles render. When I use blender's curve-3d-tools the resulting 3D mesh looks terrible. Fixing the mesh manually just takes too long. Could this addon be used instead? If so, is the documentation understandable, up-to-date and usable?

    • I believe the usefulness in that case will depend on how much text you would like to convert to mesh. I think you could get accurate results faster with Bsurfaces than modeling by hand, although both modeling by hand and Bsurfaces are precisely "modeling" instead of automatic conversions. If the text is not too long then Bsurfaces and the Solidify modifier may be a good combination. You may want to check the slowed down version of the violin modeling part of the presentation, to see examples on how to use those together:

The documentation is up to date and people seem to be understanding it quite well really. Also if you have any doubt you can always contact me and I will help.
