Advanced Fire Shader Tutorial
Gottfried Hofmann has posted another tutorial for Blender’s new particle system
demonstrating a technique to create realistic looking fire.
In addition he also covers utilizing the compositor for efficient fire color correction.

I was wondering if there was a way of making the mesh catch on fire from one point so that the flames spread across. perhaps using vertex groups or using the “Build” modifier on the mesh used as the smoke genration object?

Perhaps you could paint a UV texture onto the mesh using black and white values for the start times of different points of the mesh. Then map that as a texture to the particle system and set it to the Time property.
