In my opinion, I don't think it a good idea to start buying books now, because very soon there will be books for Blender 2.53 and go on. But this is a good new nevertheless and could help with learning the skills from older version to the newer version.
Holding off learning is silly. The books usually come with the version of blender best tailored for the book anyway. Everyone who makes good pieces in 2.5x learned how to use blender from an older version.

I can get Incredible Machines for $55 at Barnes and Noble. Where is the $80 price tag coming from that they list on their site?
80$ is for multiple format download but if your using blender this is absolutely ludicrous as your using more of your brain than the majority of the global populace i assume your not lazy! lol
Good point Logan. For beginners I would perhaps recommend a wait for the 5.2x books to arrive. For people that know blender well enough and start to waddle into the upcoming blender 2.5 platform will most likely find their way through in these books.
