I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Community Lead at n8n.

The angle of the cake looks a bit odd upon the background (which I assume is composited). Otherwise, brilliant!

Hahaha. Happy birthday. Lol. I kinda get confused by the writings here. It looks like some think its a render, some thinks its a real cake. Lol. What is it really? I think it was a real cake.

Ok, so as far as I can tell, the cake is real. The reason people assume it’s a render is simply because since it is posted on blendernation it is automatically assumed to be a demonstration of some super-awesome rendering technique (which it is: it’s called photography). Going by the original forum post, I’d guess that the Suzanne model on top was lovingly crafted out of putty (so it’s not actually edible). Even still, this is an awesome bit of work- I’m not sure myself if it would have been easier to do in blender or in the real world!

That Suzanne is fantastic… looks like it was superimposed. I hope you let them watch a display of you being speechless… tonne of love gone into making that cake.
