Blender on the BBC

24

Blender was featured in last week's episode of Click - 'the BBC's flagship technology programme'. Kate Russel talks about Big Buck Bunny, Elephants Dream and how to get started with Blender.

Kate writes:

While big budget animated films are all the rage for the likes of Disney and Pixar, you can actually create your own low budget production using open source software that you can download for free if you visit blender.org.

[...]

Persevere and you will be amazed by what you can create.

Right on, Kate!

It's a fun item to watch, and Super3boy must be thrilled to bits to make his appearance on the British National Television! The amount of high-profile coverage that Blender is receiving these days is amazing..

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Blender on the BBC? Fantastic news..... with a couple of million viewers this should bring the name of Blender to a great many people who may not have heard of it before! Great to see Super3boy mentioned, his tutorials rock!

  2. @Bart: How did you get to know all of this single-handedly? are you a web-spider? :)

Thanks for the great news and keep up crawling the international network in search of Blender news.

  3. Bart, we should be bold and ask BBC, if we can place for the next few days a link to Blender on there webpage, with a little paragraph. At least they talked about us, so they can round it up with a little article on their webpage.

  4. Excellent, exposure on the BBC, now that's global reach!

I guess the woman that introduces that programs is not just a pretty face if she was happily making stuff with Blender in 6 hours.

  5. Whoo-hoo! Personally, I don't watch BBC, but if Blender's on TV that's good. Also somewhere other than the Netherlands! :p

  6. Thats awesome that Blender was featured...but I have to disagree with her that super3boys tutorials are helpful. I've learned absolutely nothing from them...and the first to minutes are an infomercial. Sure its exposure for Blender on all fronts...but throwing more crap out there doesn't help it. Thank goodness for Elephants Dream, BBB, and Yo Frankie for showing the true guts behind it.

  7. To the comment by Paroxysmal above, I believe your argument may be skewed. My tutorials are aimed the beginning users with little to no experience with the program or 3D modeling software in general. The presentation of my tutorials was perfect because I am pretty sure that would be the audience viewing the show. If you have had a good deal of experience in the program of course my tutorials will not help you. In response to 'infomercial' statement I only 'advertise' my forum in order to off-load some of the questions that people have about blender. Due to time constraints it is impossible for me to reply to the massive amount of email I get related to my tutorials. It also has spawned collaboration projects, peer work critique, and many user tutorials.

I hope I cleared things up.
