This one's been our todo list for a while and the tutorial isn't too recent, but it's a nice technique to experiment with during the upcoming weekend.
Oto the Cleaner (we covered one of his other tutorials earlier this year) explains how to vertexpaint a Lara Croft character, achieving a rather acceptable result.
It'll cost you a handfull of extra vertices and faces but it'll save you the trouble of creating your own UV textures :)

I've wondered for awhile what that does thanks for the post
seeing as vertex colors doesnt cost any extra power, unlike textures, this is great for games.
One could achieve some great "retro" looking effects with this, very nice.
