GIMP 2.7 Development Release
The GIMP team have just released version 2.7. This version is a ‘development’ version, or a snapshot of the current version in their development tree. While it’s not stable or final, it contains a lot of new goodness that may be useful to you.
GIMP has always been the ideal companion for blender in texturing, post-processing and other 2D tasks. The GIMP team is proud to announce the new development release – GIMP 2.7.0
Some of the new features include:
- Resource tagging – you can now tag your GIMP resources
- Improved Brush dynamics – new features were added to the brush dynamics, such as controlling the brush aspect-ratio
- Brushes can now be rotated in the same way they can be scaled – no more need to create copies of brushes
- JPEG 2000 support was added
As part of being a development release, it is unstable. If you use it, make sure to save often =) If you found a bug in the development release, make sure you submit a bug report to the GIMP bugzilla (Check if it wasn’t already reported!)
Pay attention to the warning about the stability of this version:
This is an unstable development version of the GNU Image Manipulation Program. Please realize that this is just a snapshot of the development tree. We are working hard towards GIMP 2.8, the next stable release. GIMP 2.7 is in no way a final product. A lot of new features are incomplete and some things may even be completely broken. If you need to get work done, please use the stable version, GIMP 2.6.

I hope that GIMP 2.7 will be used in Durian project. Will it be ready then?
The improvements to text tool is all I needed to hear to make me happy.
So, suppose I don’t know how to compile source code, are there any binaries for this version? either Linux or Windows would do.
Really looking forward for a single window interface for gimp and mypaint.

A question for the windows version: it still has multiple windows or it’s possible to have a single gimp window on the screen?

Planned for 2.10 AFAIK, definitely not in 2.7-2.8.

I *really* hope they get the ability to manipulate the font of selected text within the layer ( eg set size / alternative font / style ).
Some very important notes aren’t included:
– Work is starting on HDR-images, more than 8bit per component per pixel.
– Layer groups are being implemented, they could be ready by the time Gimp 2.8 comes out.
– And as mentioned earlier, text is now on-canvas and works beautifully, it gets preserved the way it should in it’s own layer.
I’d love to see 3D painting with Gimp … in Photoshop CS3 EXtended and CS4 you can import a 3D .obj and paint on it, rotate, scale, change lighting. This is what I’d love to see in Gimp. It’s one of the reasons I haven’t jumped from Photoshop to Gimp to be honest.

I bet Durian will use the most recent stable release of GIMP, once they start getting into the project.

have they fixed that scaling issue where when scaling it leaves an ‘after image’ while you are scaling so you can not see you bottom layer to match up the layer your scaling?
