A cinematic reinterpretation inspired by Gaki Zōshi (Scroll of Hungry Ghosts) – a 12th-century Heian-era narrative scroll and National Treasure of Japan, preserved at the Tokyo National Museum.
This is an attempt to translate the ‘painted silence,’ ritual, and spiritual unease of the original ink scroll into a modern language of light, space, and time. Rather than a standard recreation, I approached this as a theatrical staging of dread. The goal was to embrace the duality of the sacred and the grotesque, bringing a 2D flat narrative into a 3D uncomfortable reality where the shadows are as intentional as the light. By bridging the gap between 12th-century pigment and 21st-century pixels, I sought to make the ancient void feel present.
