Taking the advantage of Optix in Blender 2.82 Alpha turned very handy for getting this close to displaced geometry. This includes minimal modelling. All the "skin" geometry is produced by the most basic voronoi and noise texture setup. Very powerful tools if used right, even when you suck at sculpting/drawing/designing like I do.
Just play with values and you're good to go!
