I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I'm fine with the eyes.
In fact I'm extremely impressed overall.

For me its the ear though.
It's just looks totally flat and - ?melted?
I can't follow its curves at all. It's like one of those Escher paintings where nothing actually joins up.

I've spent the last 15 minutes trying to find a better resolution version to try and overcome this as I'm assuming it's an illusion due the scale. No luck.

It's a shame when there's one negative feature that grabs your attention and you have to fight to ignore it to enjoy all the great features. The exact inverse of one of my renders!

  2. This is one of the best realistic head models I've seen in blender. The 2 things that popped out at me immediatly was around the nostril area, behind, it looks like there's a slight crease around both sides. The other is the eyes. The right(character) eye is too dark in the corner, which is especially noticable in the front-on view. In the angle view, the other eye almost looks like it's looking into the camera. A very odd optical illusion or perhaps the eye itself is angled off? Or both issues may be a lighting problem inside the eye? I didn't notice the ear initially, but it does look a bit flat, like it needs to be fatten up a bit.

This is very impressive work and i'm sure it took hrs of work to get it just right. I like the fact that she's not perfectly symmetrical. The added work in these details really makes it stand out and life-like. I was on BN looking at another post and saw this as the header and just had to check out the awesomeness! :)

    • I think i spotted one of the eye's problem. The left eye needs to be nudged a little bit closer to the nose IMO.
Hope to see heaps more of your work on BN. Very inspiring! And yes, as Gavin said, the skin looks terrific!

  3. The skin shader looks amazing...really looks like real skin. The main issue for me is the ear and the fact that it looks like your texture doesn't totally line up with the geometry. It seems off in the eyelids and corners of the eyes and also the edges of the nose.

That being said, I'm extremely impressed that it looks like real skin. You really nailed it.

    Congrats

  4. To be honest it does look pretty good but I get the feeling that there is a lot of projection painting going on here and not a lot of modeling detail such as the ear....I would guess that it is basically flat. If I'm wrong I appologize but I see a lot of projection painting going on now-a-days:) If the artist could clarify that would be nice:)

  5. this is incredible!

I do feel that the eyes are the cause of the "uncanny valley" feeling though. I personally think it's caused by the eye ducts. They're not formed properly, too high, and too round they should be more oblong and make their way closer to the nose.

fantastic achievement! great skin shader as well, wow!!

  6. is anybody on this blog named renior, monet, divinchi, mabye micheal angelo.if so i'd love some advice on portrature.if not well you get it.and i uderstand consructive critisism but come on.cut the guy some slack its a really nice job. happy blending.

  7. UNBELIEVEBLE, fanstastic.
From the philosophy point of view: the simulation and modelling are on the level, where we cannot find the difference between reality and... Its like virtual machine running on virtual machine on PC...

  8. That's great!!!
    Almost perfect.
her face look real. And good texture.
And yes the problem are the eyes.
Or u can put patchs over both eyes. lol
Tutorial? I m sure everyone want. Why not!!

  9. That's a striking picture! I think it shows character. The head is not symmetric which adds to the realism. I do believe there's a slight texture problem around the nose, it looks like the "original" nostrils are mapped slightly outside the mesh.
