Gargantua

The Interstellar gave me a big dose of inspiration. Right after i saw it i began working on this. After long renders and many iterations got this. Hope you like it.

The idea of simulating gravitaional lensing in blender without coding came to me right after i saw the movie. It is done with multiple refraction surfaces with varying ior. I shared the main distortion setup on blendswap, feel free to use.
I started working on accretion disk with smoke simulation. I got some good results, maybe some of them could even end being better than end result, but as i couldn't use GPU, render times were extremely high (48h+ for 1080p) doing all the test renders would take too much time, so i decided to go full procedural. At the end, the accretion disk is done through mixing multiple noise textures with coordinates warped around black hole. and many ramps and gradients. Now i'm working on a little animation in style of interstellar. Maybe it'll take some time :)

  1. I really like this. I almost get a since that' i'm floating when I go to full screen. Not sure if this was your intention or not. Definitely has a sense of large scale.
