There's a weekly competition for Blender Artists over at Discord. This week's theme was potato and this image was my entry.
A potato dish was the first thing that came to mind, and of course french fries with a side of ketchup had to be my pick. I needed it to look natural, as if arranged by accident, just tossed on a plate by a human being, so I used rigid body simulation on every french fry and made them fall on the plate colliding with each other. Perfect.
Next I needed a good composition, so I looked for professionaly made photos of dishes, and almost all of them were taken top down. Thing is, just a plate with fries is boring, doesn't tell any story, so I imagined me ordering a plate of fries, I'd need a glass of water with that, salt is never right, so the shaker had to be near, and I'm sure my hands would get greasy so a napkin had to be included.
My entry ended up winning the competition, and I'll continue to work hard and to improve so that people believe they can do it too, if they try.
