BlenderNation Turns 20 and Needs You: Join Our Editorial Team

20 years ago, on January 3, 2006, I started BlenderNation (back then it was called VrotVrot.com). Since then, I’ve maintained it almost daily as a news source for the Blender community – a place where people could read what was happening in Blender development, see new artwork, and discover tutorials.

It has brought me enormous joy and pride over the years. But I don’t think I’m the right person to keep doing this anymore. I have a very demanding job that leaves me with little time and little energy to write daily. And honestly, I’ve also lost touch a bit with what’s current and relevant. At the same time, I don’t want BlenderNation to disappear. I’ve always seenBlenderNation as a cornerstone of the Blender community, and I believe it has contributed to Blender’s success, even if only in a small way. So I think it’s now the time for BlenderNation to evolve into a shared project, run by a team of editors.

I’m looking for 4-5 passionate Blender users to join me as editors. Not just to moderate incoming news, but to write real articles, like analyses of Blender development, interviews with developers and community leaders, profiles of important artists. People who are actively working with Blender and who are connected and tuned in to the community, and who want to contribute back in this way.

Could that person be you?

What I’m offering

  • Your name as BlenderNation editor (great for your portfolio and career)
  • Direct connections to the Blender community and industry
  • Access to my network for interviews and collaborations
  • Opportunities to review software and hardware
  • Active guidance and involvement – we’ll set up a private area on Blender Artists for team communication
  • A voice in shaping BlenderNation’s future – we’ll be rethinking the site together

What I’m looking for

  • Active Blender users who are connected to the community
  • People who can write clearly and engage readers
  • Commitment to contribute regularly (around 10 posts per month after a ramp-up period)
  • WordPress experience is helpful but not required
  • Most importantly: people who want to think about Blender, not just redistribute existing content

You’re welcome to focus on a specific area if you prefer – whether that’s Blender development, curating artwork, tutorials, or something else. There’s flexibility in how you contribute.

I will start with a 3-month trial period where we’ll see if it’s a good fit on both sides. The goal is for you to become increasingly independent in your editorial work.

How to apply

Interested? To apply, email me at [email protected] with:

  • A brief intro about yourself
  • Your Blender experience (how long, how you use it)
  • Why you want to write for BlenderNation
  • Links to previous writing (Blender-related or otherwise)
  • What kind of articles you’d most like to write
  • How much time you can realistically invest per week
  • Your WordPress experience (if any)

I’ll be moving away from daily writing, but I’m not giving up on BlenderNation. I’m becoming more of a managing editor and enabler – someone who helps the team do great work rather than doing all the work myself. I see this is an evolution, not an ending.

If this sounds like something you’d be excited about, reach out. I’m looking forward to building this team!
