Faking Source Engine – using the Blender Game Engine

It started out as a late-night test and soon turned into a somewhat personal story and creative outlet.
My goal was to trick players, write a proper story, and make something that feels both nostalgic and believable.

As simple as the visuals look, faking an engine inside another engine is no small task. I had to replicate stencil shadows, lightmaps, old shading methods, and even recreate player movement from scratch.

I wanted both the story and the tech to feel real — something that could have come straight out of the early 2000s. I also wanted to experience how developers back then approached their assets, optimization, and the overall culture, a generation I never got to be part of.

It’s an experimental walking sim, but I hope it gives artists a new perspective on their own unseen work.

You can play it for free here

If you’d like to try out the blender game engine (but better) – I’d highly reccomend you check out Range Engine.
